Started to happen to my 2001 E46 M3, myne was just showing a few hairline cracks, BMW will repair the car FOC if the car is standard and under 10 years old. Costs them about Ł3000 to do. Seems a pritty common problem on the E46's!.

Very common problem with them i'm affraid.

Taken from a forum I use.

At the end of last season at the ring, the mechanic I use at the ring (Tom Schirmer) noticed a small stress crack on the bodyshell, right beside the front subframe mount. He told me he's only seen it a few times before, and he's seen quite a few CSLs that get worked hard. We didn't have time to fix it then (I was returning home) but it needs fixed before any more track work he reckoned.

Anyway, we finally got the car on the ramps today (back in Scotland) and took off the whole rear axle:

And after cleaning off the grime we could see the crack had got worse.

Luckily we've caught it in time though, we're welding the crack and then going to weld 4 plates on each subframe mount, that should stop it happening again.

1. image one shows the crack and the weak spot weld welded up.

2. shows the reinforceing plate in position ready to weld.

3. shows the plate seam and plug welded into position.

4. shows the welds ground down ready for etching primer.

5. o/s rear mount.

6. n/s rear mount.

7. a coat of underbody colour on top of etch primer.

8. o/s rear all painted up.

Bloody hell thats terrible. Someone like myself wouldnt think twice about checking somewhere like that. Infact if you went to a view a car u wouldnt even be able to see there. Imagine spending out on a mint m3 csl and then discover that at a later date.
Out of interest, whats the worst case scenario that can happen as a result of this?

If it was me id be hoping it was showing signs of failure!. Rather get the fault sorted asap as other wise id be checking the car every 6 months.
Bmw replace the entire panel and then inject the void spaces with structural foam, not sure why that guy with the CSL went it alone, id rather let BMW sort it, as once you have messed with that area you are on your own and cannot claim.

That is Steve Gill,

The car is far from what BMW would look at, it is a fully caged up track car which practically lives over at the Ring most of the year.

Ah right fair enough then!, Just some guy at work was advised to purchase a plate kit much like the above and the garage fitted, which means BMW wash their hands with it if anything else happens to that area.

Just had a look at the old mans 51 plate E46 tourer - Not sure if there are any stress cracks starting to show but I've told him to ring BMW and book it in - Pretty sure they'll inspect it for free as it's under 10 years?
