Saxo VTR vs Vectra 1.8 LS
I posted up a thread last week about potentially purchasing a Saxo VTR as a runabout. I went ahead with the deal and i've been running about in it for the past week, however I have just been offered a deal on a Vectra 1.8 LS.
The Vectra is an R reg, has 16" Fox alloys MoT March 09 Tax Nov 08 134k but plenty of history. The Saxo is an R reg also, bog standard MoT Feb 09 Tax Sept 08 116k plenty of history.
Deal is Vectra + 200 notes for the Saxo but unsure whether to go for it or not.
The Vectra would be better in that its a bigger car so would be handy for when I need to cart lots of gear around but unsure - what you would you do in the same position?

Dicko,
Yeah i've had a 1.8 LS before and it was OK as a runabout but not a patch on the 2.0 SRi I had before it. Just to add (seeing as your local) my daily commute (5 days a week) takes me from Guisborough all the way up the A19 to Washington so need something that doesn't mind the 80 mile round trip gives good performance and is economical. The Saxo is bloody good on a run and ok nipping around town, going off my last 1.8 Vectra they do drink fuel...

Vectra prob nicer to drive on the motorway and considerably more comfortable full stop, but wouldnt pay an extra £200 for a vectra over a VTR

Its 200 cash my way + the Vectra for the Saxo
To be fair the Vectras virtually immaculate and has been extremely well looked after (i've done 95% of the maintainence on it in the last 2 years of which my mate has owned it) and it drives well but like you said, I always thought my 2.0 SRi was MUCH better on fuel than the last 1.8 I had.
We don't have a big family trip that requires a big car until September so I might just hold out with the Saxo until August time then sell it and use some of the money I get from it to buy a cheap Mondeo Diesel for that. Going to have a proper look over this Vec on Sunday, however.

Vectra in question sorry about the crap pic but only one I have at the moment. It has GSi rear skirt on and Magnex backbox already and I happen to have a Vectra GSi bumper in my garage (which I was initially going to get sprayed up for my mate to fit to this car anyway!!)

I personally would burn them both.
But seeing as you are torn between a Paxo and a vauxhall, the vauxhall would probably be a fairer deal, providing the water pump and cambelt have been changed when required.

If you want a cheap runaround buy a mk 2 or mk 3 fiesta or equivalent, I paid £600 for a N reg mk 3 with 67k on the clock, FSH, 5 door, does the job intended, quite economical with a 1.3 engine, cheap tax, piss all insurance cost. Job done
Naturally the local "boy racers" round here in their Paxo VTR's think it's a pile of shit and a snotter, but alas, the smiles were wiped off their face yesterday when I chattered past them in the RS Turbo

as much as i don't really like saxos i hate vectras a whole lot worse, at least the vtr has a bit of performance and character even if it is a bit chavvy, still a better car for a to b travelling than the vectra imo.
a kiddy at work is always winging about the poor mpg he gets from his 1800 vectra.

Keeping hold of the Saxo now...just been and bought an R plate Mondeo for £350 to use as a daily runabout and seeing as i've pretty much abandoned my XR2 track project (I ain't been to the unit never mind done any work on the car for 9 months!!) I might strip the VTR and have a bit of a laugh with it
