the money i have spent on this car to make it reliable is rediculous and not once has it performed for me, first outing got and exhaust knock, few leeks and minor problems, second outing blew the engine up and the syincro rings went in my indistructable gearbox and my third outing i got less than an hour on the track due to more problems
the car is rock hard rattely ride on the road cant be used for a day car anymore, it can but not a comfy one, so do i cage it and strip it out and have it as a full race car or do i cash it in and buy a car that i wont need a trailer, car to pull the trailer, car i can drive every day and still kick the arse out of it on track
Also im looking at throwing my last bit of cash on a big engine are things going to get worse with more power i only have 320hp and i cant even drive it hard
if i nroke the escort as it stands i could pay for one of the above outright with funds left to do a few needed mods as im sure it will need some bits and bobbs

My next move with your car (if it were mine) would be to rip all the trim out, cage it and make it into a track car ... Then only occasionally drive it on the road.
its not so much the money it owes its more that it wont stop breaking and it wont let me get a full track day out of it

I had an EVO VIII 260 GSR and Ł2,500 saw 343hp and 340lbs it was bloody awsome bang for buck unbeatable, did an airfield day in it and the car was superb and there was not much on the day that was coming past and I'm no Lewis Hamilton
having said that....
if you love your Cossie then do not be surprised if you find yourself in the Newsagents buying FastFord and Performance Ford once the EVO novelty has worn off
but that all depends on you, if your like Lyn then you won't look back, if your like me and the Escort Cosworth is more than the sum of its parts you'll be back

evo's are newer so expect better quality,
400bhp on the standard engine is about the limit running 1.6 bar.
beyond that a stroker kit is the best option with uprated clutch which will take you to 500bhp but then the turbo hits its limit, new turbo and intercooler will see 700 bhp+
gearboxes and diff etc are good for around 600bhp and clutch for around 400bhp
this is what mark@MAD advised me with my evo 6
not much difference with the 8 and 9 really but the 400 is not worth it as the lower bhp ones can be tuned just as much and cost less as they are not limited editions,
if i wanted a track toy an evo would be the way but if i wanted a car with charecter and show i would have the cosworth

I'd go for the IX FQ320 & tune it. Been out in a tuned VIII FQ320 & drove a IX FQ340, both great cars but you can feel the difference between them. Depends which one you prefer.
Both great cars so don't think you can go far wrong which ever you choose.

If it were me i;d go and test drive both of them, see how you feel afterwards and then decide.
The FQ400 is a little laggy yes, i test drove one @ Xtreme, great cat though with some great parts on it, i.e nice Alcon brakes, engine will take alot more power bla bla.
I 've just bought my 3rd Evo and i can tell you that's my cossie days over (THAT'S NOT A COSSIE DIG BEFORE YOU ALL START) But you have to drive one of these to appreciate how well they go and yes i knw before i get blagged again, they're 18-20 yrs younger bla bla, but for the money you can pick these cars up for now adays i don't think anything comes close..
You can get the best part of 400bhp similar ft.lb for 1k with RC DEVELOPMENTS ....How much to get a cossie to that?? NUFF SAID..............

What amazed me when I first went in an evo 8 was the sheer cornering speed they can go with, scarey if you've got the balls. They feel another level (and should I suppose) to the evo 6.
If it's a toss up between the 8 or 9, then go 9 if you can.. better looking bumpers (especially the rear) and MIVEC engine too.

I've owned a 380 ish hp 4x4 Saff on coilovers Greys, low comp, T34.63 etc.... and then bought a Evo 6 RS2.... which was standard apart from a set of springs, comp MO's, exhaust, air filter and a apexi ecu @ 1.6 bar which made 306bhp@ wheels.
The evo could be used everyday and was much faster in every situation apart from a very top end run... (ie. 150+) which idont like anyway.
It actually cost me less to own and i did double the mileage in less than half the time i owned the cosworth AND i didnt hate myself for wasting hard earned money on a old ford worth nothing in comparison to what it owed me again!!
PS....Go on the MLR and read up on evo 9 GT's. This car will suit you perfectly. It was all the comforts you need, electrics, AC, HIDs etc but has RS diffs which will take anything you can throw at them and is lighter than GSRs.
No point buying a 9 because you will lose fortunes in depreciation.

Stroker kits arent that bad either cost wise

I liked Jonathan's white Evo 9 MR at Dono (RS diffs / gearbox etc) that he had a 2.3 litre stroker kit pushing 600+bhp. AP 6-pots, Recaro SPGs x 2 (Ł3k worth!), 2nd engine (first big power engine shat itself ) and must have cost him the best part of Ł50k this year alone.
The good think about Evos are that there are just so many things you can do to them, the bad thing is that there are so many top spec ones out there, that you have to really spend a fortune to stand out, and believe you me, the power thing is addictive. Gary from APT started out building the car to his own desired spec, but has then been caught up in the horsepower war and CONSTANTLY wants to spend more on it to improve it - it has consumed him TOTALLY .
If it was me, I would do what Jonathan did, buy the cheapest RS type spec version that has the creature comforts that are important to you, and then modify that. Forget any cars equipped with AYC, as they are RUBBISH and only fractionally less fragile than the Cossie diffs, when big power is put into them. All the big power cars that started off as AYC cars scrap the diffs and have to fit the RS versions (at Ł3k for the rear diff alone! ). The RS gearbox also limits the top speed to 155mph @8k, but is much stronger than the standard ones.
Whichever one you chose, I think you will find they are anodyne compared to the Escort. I would have loved to have brought my car to Dono to have mixed it with the Evos, but alas it wasn't ready. At Bedford, you will be able to see how my car goes .

i was looking at maybe spending 10k on a mondeo st tdci as a good reliable family car (4 doors and boot to get a pram etc in) or maybe a passat or audi a4..
then i seen an evo fq320 for 14k with carbon bonnet and boot lid..
now, i can prolly get 2k trade in for the 406, and an evo would be far more entertaining than a mondeo lol
on the other hand, i have ALWAYS wanted to own an esc cos, but for the same cash you can have an 04 reg evo thats 12 years newer
oh decisions
i know fook all about evos, so how tunable are the fq320??
are they quick enough as std? it will prolly stay as is, as the wife will be using daily, and me just on the track lol

Deffo go for a IX (Preferably a XI GT) over the XIII MR FQ400.
Stroking the MIVEC motor to 2.3 with 272 cams and an FP green turbo gets you 500 of both that boosts from nowhere. You cant beat it for a reliable everyday road car IMO.

Mike mentioned the AYC diffs hence why myself and 15D said buy a IX GT.

I chose a IX and with 2k pounds spend produces 384bhp and looks 100% std
and I am 100% happy with it. The IX also has many carry over parts from the MR
Mine was to replace a cosworth but as yet still haven't had the heart to sell it

Isn't every new model better in real world use?
It depends what you want it for mine is a daily drive.
If you want a huge power track warrior then you buy some thing suitable for that.
At the end of the day how often are you on track compared with hurtling round country lanes when ever the fancy takes you.
How many of us have the ability to make use of the huge power cars? I know we like to think we have. But it seems the bigger the power the more we brag and less we drive them.
