What amazed me when I first went in an evo 8 was the sheer cornering speed they can go with, scarey if you've got the balls. They feel another level (and should I suppose) to the evo 6.

If it's a toss up between the 8 or 9, then go 9 if you can.. better looking bumpers (especially the rear) and MIVEC engine too.
