Default Evo 8 or 9 what would you pick and why?

If you had the choice what would you go for out of a MITSUBISHI EVO 8 MR FQ-400 and a MITSUBISHI EVO 9 HKS MR FQ-360 both cars having only 12000 miles on the clock and in mint condition

Does anyone know what Power the stock internals can take I.E. pistons, Crank, rods ect and when head work and cams would be needed?

what sort of power can the Diffs, Clutch and gearbox take before you start seeing problems

Are the breaks, suspension all worthy of hard track usage say compared to 6pot AP’s ect and if not what is the best breaks and suspension to go for

Please for any other reasons you would have one or the other feel free to post up why and for what reasons

thanks

not sure on the specs of them but mostly everyone has said it would be better going for the lesser powered one and chipping that up to nearer 400 bhp instead of going for the 400 model, think the turbo is too big on the 400 model.

just looking at my options i love the escort more than anything i have ever owned but the cash is running out fast and soon it will be a show peace as i wont be able to afford to run it and i dont want somthing that is going to sit in a garage gathering dust

the money i have spent on this car to make it reliable is rediculous and not once has it performed for me, first outing got and exhaust knock, few leeks and minor problems, second outing blew the engine up and the syincro rings went in my indistructable gearbox and my third outing i got less than an hour on the track due to more problems

the car is rock hard rattely ride on the road cant be used for a day car anymore, it can but not a comfy one, so do i cage it and strip it out and have it as a full race car or do i cash it in and buy a car that i wont need a trailer, car to pull the trailer, car i can drive every day and still kick the arse out of it on track

Also im looking at throwing my last bit of cash on a big engine are things going to get worse with more power i only have 320hp and i cant even drive it hard

if i nroke the escort as it stands i could pay for one of the above outright with funds left to do a few needed mods as im sure it will need some bits and bobbs

Im sure you have more than 320bhp Ben, a peak of 1.9bar must make it good for more than that.

As we was saying the other day you could of had a nice Audi RS4 on the drive with what you have spent on the escort and it would still be driving

I'd personally go for a IX as it's newer.... but I love my VIII. It's superb on the road and on track with only a change of springs for handling as mine is a GSR import which doesn't have the Bilsteins like the MRs have.

There's quite a few low mileage VIIIs for sale which are still well within the warranty period and you're less likely to suffer so much depreciation if you got a IX.

Take a look on MLR and you'll find plenty of threads and articles about both the VIII and IX.

One thing that is a huge bonus with both models, they have gearboxes that are good for 500-600bhp unlike an escos one

My mate has one and he wouldn't say it's horrible to drive... the only fault with an FQ400 is that it's laggy.... like most cossies are

Isnt this post a bit like going on Tesco site asking how good Asda are ? Just look at the appropriate Evo forums and read up on things, the MLR might appear snobby to some but the technical articles and model info are ace.

Go to this page on MLR http://www.lancerregister.com/reg_sh...models=EVO%208. If you click on user's name you will see what mods have been done to get the bhp they have.

Id keep your escort. Dont get me wrong evo's are great you can tune them to a decent level and still retain reliability. But there something missing, it doesnt feel like your driving the car (if you know what i mean).

Saying all that if your going for one has to be the 9, Mivec head etc sod depreseation they are all going to drop in price

As for upping the power 500 is easily obtainable. I wouldnt go over 500 without upping gearbox etc but i know alot of people do and have very little problems.

Your would be amazed at how much power can be had for minimal mods

much better than an SMG,,,, it has the next gear selected before you pull the paddle

i think evo's are a great car i've driven a fair few, i would prefer an 8 onwards, the 6 looks mean but i would want a later car (maybe a 7 in french blue)
exhaust & remap normally sees between 350-380bhp while still being reliable, i've been keeping my eyes on the prices latley, the other option is a subaru sti 8, lot of car for not much more than 10k!

I would not off load the Escort just yet and I wouldn't up the power either enjoy what you have rather than spending more dosh and making the car annoy you because of the amount it owes, take a look at Dangerous's car...It's not a monster spec (similar to yours in many ways) and he has reliability and fun.

My next move with your car (if it were mine) would be to rip all the trim out, cage it and make it into a track car ... Then only occasionally drive it on the road.

I would have the FQ 360 Its a later car and is rapido, the 400 suffers a bit of turbo lag as described by Clarkson when he had a play in one.

An MR 340 plus EcuTek remap or Autronic will get you a reliable 370-380bhp - EcuTek being the cheaper option.

Quick Reply: Evo 8 or 9 what would you pick and why?
