No, just keep the receipt somewhere safe and do no more.

it seems that IF a car has not been taxed in the last few years youdont get a SORN reminder, as in if youd had a car up on bricks in a lockup for some years, it isnt on the new system. but DVLA are sending new logbooks to all people - (mine has arrived and mine has been declared sorn for 15 months now (you do have to renew sorn each year, yes) a lad at our place got a fine for a bike though, he bough off ebay in a cardboard box in bits, transfered it into his name , no sorn not tax though, got a 45 quid fine through (increasing to 80 if not paid within 14 days) to tax the bike for a year its only 35 quid FFS - ANOTHER stealth tax from this marvolous government me thinks...

Just as a point of interest (or not) if you buy a vehicle and it is currently on SORN, the new owner has to re-SORN it. The 12 month period then starts again. If you dont re-SORN it upon purchace when you come to tax it for the first time it will trigger the computer and it will issue you with a fine for the back tax to when you got it.

no as ya tax it from when ya purchased it, otherwise ya sorn it from date of purchase ( and take it home on a trailor ) then tax when ya go to use it, btw ya cant drive the car to the post office to tax a car thats untaxed for some fooking up reason even though the tax will start and the start of the month

Just copied this from the DVLA website.

If you are the keeper of a vehicle and you do not license it because you do not use it or keep it on a public road, you must tell us as soon as you take the vehicle off the road. Telling us about this is called declaring SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). This also applies if you have recently purchased a vehicle and the previous keeper has declared SORN. Once you have made a SORN declaration you will be sent an acknowledgement letter within 4 weeks confirming the details. If the acknowledgement letter is not received after 4 weeks you must immediately contact Customer Enquiries Group on 0870 240 0010.

You only need to make a SORN for a vehicle that had a licence in force on or after 31 January 1998.
