Default Anyone know the DVLA sorn rules ?

When i bought my shell off Ryan it came with the SORN declaration as he had declared it.

I recieved me V5 promptly but never have i had a tax reminder etc

this monring i got a £40 fine + £27 duty

I tried ringing the office were the letter came from and its an automated answer machine

tried ringing DVLA Swansea and they are "not allowed to discuss fines" and offered to give me the office that issued the fine's phone number - back to the automated answer machine.

My cars been off the road as im rebuilding it, had i known i had to re-declare it sorn i would have but i have not recieved any notification at all, and i thought it was SORN for a year from the date it was declared.

anyone had anything similar or got any info ?

not 100% on it mate but if it were me, id pay the fine and be done with it. The DVLA couldn't give a fcuk about peoples stories, they will just keep increasing the fine until you pay.

Saying that, if you have a copy of the Sorn declaration/certificate from Ryan you may have a case????

We had this once, the old man got a few motors, usually declares em sorn over winter, one of them, he refunded the tax, on that form you have to declare SORN also, so really they were bang to rights, they said, they didnt recieve the decleration, £100 fine, straight away...

WE defo filled it out when got refund, phoned up, told em usual, we did it blah blah, always declare sorn etc

Had to put it in writing to the name of the person on the letter, didnt hear anything after that, till got a new Sorn decleration reminder thingy through the post..

As you say, I would write to them, giving dates etc, but pay it also, then you may get it refunded back, but if they prove you are at fault and you dont pay it, could become costly

The Sorn Only runs for a year , so you need to re-new it like your tax. This might be the reason.

I have just done mine.

Not true, m8 of mine received a letter for fine + back tax. He wrote the cheque to the full amount, filled in the form explaining that he had not registered the car after buying it.
DVLA wrote back saying it wasn't his responsiblity to register the car but the previous owner's and got the fine money back.

Its because you changed address of where the car was originally sorned, therefore when you changed the V5 you also needed to redeclare sorn at the new address as the old one would be nul and void due to the relocation.

thats how it was told to me mate but its not exactly clear.

I would say send them off the original SORN with a covering letter saying you believed it was still covered when ownership was transfered ( avoid pic of shell on trailer as they may then swipe your V5 off you) and you never know your luck.

watch out though as while they decide, the fine might automatically go up, might be worth just biting the bullet but I know how you feel

This is correct.

The new keeper must make their own SORN declaration or Tax the vehicle from the date of purchase.

BUT they don't know that the address of where the vehicle is kept has changed!!!

The owner may have changed but the address for SORN may not, a possible angle of attack is to say the car has been stored at the original SORN address (if Ryan agrees) and you will be moving it shortly

I wouldn't pay it if I was in your position

Good idea by John, that should work.

So how do you re-register your car back on the road if it has a SORN??
