Default Techy Question - Clutch Hydraulic Line Bore Size

Whilst I'm in the process of re-sealing my clutch slave & master cylinders I'm thinking of renewing the clutch lines.

Question is do I go -3 or -4 size.

I understand that -3 size would make for a harder pedal feel and -4 should mean a more reliable gearchange due to the extra fluid involved?? Is this correct?

Anyone had any experience in running different sized lines???

Currently as standard mine seems to go from a -4 sized line into a normal brake line sized line!!!

The pipe between the two cylinders has no effect of the pressure.

As long as the pipe is full of incompressible fluid it makes no difference if the tube connecting two cylinders is 1mm in area or a mile in area.

The amount of fluid transfered is controlled by the cylinders - not the lines.

as above - only the cylinder size ratio affects anything

if you have a small cylinder at the pedal end pushing a big cylinder at the clutch end, it will be easy to push but will have to travel a long way and vice versa

Bit like a chain on a bike - small cogs on the crank, large cogs on the wheel with a chain inbetween, chain can be as big or small as it wants it aint gonna make a blind bit of difference really!!!

bit like that - except on a bike the large cog is usually on the crank and the small one is on the wheel otherwise you wouldn't be able to go very fast

apart from that, it's exactly the same. it's all about leverage. but with the clutch, don't forget that the pedal ratio and any linkage on the slave cylinder have an effect - but that doesn't matter if all you're doing is piping up an existing set up

force= pressure x area

you havent changed the pressure or the area (as the working area is the piston face) so nothing will change
