Default Anyone done a Cosworth 24v conversion ??

Have bought a 2.8 Capri with a fooked engine and been offered a 24v Cosworth Granada for very little money and thinking about using the engine from the Granada for the Capri.

Just wondered if anyone has done a conversion like this and could maybe give me some advice about how i can get it done. Its mainly the wiring side of things im looking for info on like how much of the granada loom do i need to use and what extra wires do i need to put in and where do they go etc etc.

Cheers peeps.

I started puting a 24v in a saff but gave up when it got to the hard bit (the wiring) my mate's now bought it from me and doing it him self and after he got all the granny loom laid out in the garden (you need somewhere big) and sorted out it did't look too bad there's two main plugs that you need to wire into the new car but don't ask me where they got don't think he's got that far, this is it so far:

the one you want is www.fordpower.org.uk or the like
everything is on there

what you will also need is another gearbox on the ready, because the type 9 will break

which means you will need to find a 2.9 manual flywheel, bolts and rwd mt75 gearbox, rocking horse unles you mate the 4wd bit with the 2wd bit

it's all explained there

Cheers for all the info guys but has anyone actually done this conversion with a Capri, all the one's im looking at seem to be sierra's and they have used the existing 4x4 gearbox !!!

Will the original gearbox in the capri fit onto the 24v engine ??

you can use the type 9 (capri) box it does fit straight on but at 200 bhp it is right on it's limit!

it WILL fit

it'll then explode a few months later

if you take a 2WD DOHC MT75 gearbox, and a 4x4 V6 MT75 Gearox, you can put the 2 together and build a 2WD V6 MT75 gearbox.

with both boxes you'll have all the parts, so you just need to pay the labour from a gearbox place to do the work.

www.gearboxman.co.uk does supply these gearboxes complete too

my mates got one in a mk3 cortina with a type 9 gearbox and everythings ok in it but i think some of the cortina gearboxes were beefier than others (i.e. 2.0 vs 1.6). Might be the same in teh capri, but if it's a 2.8 then it shld be fine i wld think. My dad's got a type nine in his westfield too i think, which puts out similar power and has been fine.

Thats what i was hoping to hear !!!!

My days of driving like a maniac are long gone so dont plan to thrash the shit out of this thing so hope the box stands up to the lashings of lazy torque its going to get pushed through it instead of being ragged stupid through the gears taking off from the lights !!!!

Its worth using an MT75 if you can though as you will always be worried about driving it hard, and you will drive it hard at some point

The 24v is a good conversion geoffxr4's 24v is faster than my cossie to about 50 mph by a couple of car lengths.

Not needed, non of the emissions stuff is needed either.

BOA Granada is the easy route. The enigne loome will plug into a late model 2.9 efi (ones with out airflow meters)

Built mine with a BOA

Then knocked out the big ends and fitted a BOB Nice motor and revs like fuck. But it runs on the BOA loom and ecu

Is the type-9 destruction info verified or just rumour mill stuff?

Just that I ran a type-9 in a 2.8 turbo and 3.1 conversion, both supposed to be 200hbp and neither spat the gearbox out.

Seen loads of type 9`s cog it with 24v`s.

A good strong type 9 could possibly last, depends how heavy your right foot is

you can get strengthening kits for the type 9 but it's right on the limit of it's acceptable power with 200 brake or so running through it

the mt75 conversion is easy but you do get shit ratio's to make up for the beefier internals

and i've seen plenty of type 9's laid waste by the 24V, even the 2.8's would eventually kill them

if you want to fit a 24v in a capri its as easy as anything, use the 2.8i capri flywheel, clutch ( i'd fit a new one while engine and box are apart), engine mounts and gearbox, then send you loom to mark 24v wiring, the only thing that is a slight problem is the exhausts, granada downpipes would need modding, thats it, the 24v is basicly the same block as the 2.8i so its a straight swop.

wiring is was the easy part, only 12-15 wires to splice into the car.

the rest is just nuts and bolts.

to be fair there is quite a bit to it, but mainy a case of know which bits you need of which car, as in engine mounts, power stearing conections,

been a long time since i did it tho.

Type 9's are ok but a high mileage one will not last. As long as the bearings are renewed it will hold up ok. And the ratios are much better than the mt75.

That will not work if its the cast steel one.

The bell housing from a 2.8 4x4 is the one to get, its alloy. The back of it needs to be cut off and an alloy plate made to fit the T5 box. The weld it to the bell housing and job done.
