90 spec ones aren't better than prior in relation to power but imo they look better due to the different front bumper & different rear spoiler. engine size doesn't really matter. depends if your going to get a bog standard one and build it up or whether you want to buy one already tuned. If you build it up it can work out expensive but you do feel a sense of achievement knowing you've got it how you want it. If you buy one that's already been worked on you need to know how many miles its done since the engine was rebuilt (if it has had one) and make sure it's been kept serviced & set up regularly. If you do get one either standard or worked on there are plenty of mapper tuners about Stu, Karl, Jamsport, Engine Advantages etc who are all more than willing to help you out & offer any advice & info you need

If you do go looking for one I'm sure you know the general things to look for. As these cars are knocking on a bit now, check everywhere for rust battery tray, by the fuse box, front slam panel, rear arches, rear beams. Always make sure it's cold when before it's started, check oil making sure it's not milky, check for any sign of leaks etc. When it's started have someone stand at the back make sure it's not smoking & when it's running check again for leaks especially around the turbo as these can be expensive to replace. As tempting as it is don't by the 1st one you look at check around a few others as well just to see what else is out there. It is near on impossible to find a mint one but there are a few out there but they will be priced to match the condition.

90 spec do look better in my opinion. As for getting a good one, as said look at a few, it will give you an idea of what to expect.

check for rust everywhere and accident damage and always HPI before you buy!

Engine wise, I would have a think about how you will use the car, every day or weekends? will you be doing long distances in it on a regular basis. Getting a heavily modded motor can mean they are less reliable and bits need replacing i.e gear boxes, clutches etc.

i would suggest buing a slightly modded motor as you would soon get bored with standard power.
Perhaps one with, Alloy Rad and intercooler, chip, -31 actuator, stainless exhaust, lowered suspension kit, K&N. poss some engine bay dressing , samcos and chrome etc. and a decent set of rims and tyres as these would set you back around Ł700 alone.

This will give you some reasonable reliable power and me that some expensive bits are already in.

There is a red S2 on cars for sale, white alloys and tiger stripes, looks amazing and is highly spec plus it is cheap. have a browse for it, well worth a look.

Good luck

Matt
