What is the best car for mile crunching? Commuting to work?
Saw the everyday car thread and it got me thinking......
For those that travel a fair whack to work every day (20miles+) what is the best vehicle for this, second hand wise. In terms of overall including MPG, reliability and not being too mundane? (but not necessarilly focusing on either one)
306/406 TD, Mondeo Td, Transit vans? What? And how do those who do say 30-40 miles+ to work find it? Tiring? Annoying or ok?

My Vec does a 90 mile round trip on A-roads. Takes between 50mins and 1hr 15 dependant on time and traffic (work days and nights). Driving at tea-time going home on days or mid-afternoon on the way to work gets very annoying after a while due to other drivers who dawdle along doing 10/20 mph under the speed limit and thre aren't too many places to overtake due to the level of traffic both ways. Get stuck in a queue and that's it.
Get a bit tired if I'm on days as I'm up around 5:30/ 6am dependant on when we are needed. Nights can get tiring as we never have a set time for finishing..then got an hour travelling home, then swap the cars over so my missus can get out in the morning, chill for a bit as you're wide awake from driving back, get woken early by whoever/ postman/ binmen/ noisy people outside sometimes which can be annoying and not help with tiredness.
BUT it's worth it as if I didn't I would have to pay for a poxy room with crap (normally) meals and be away from home & the missus (and the computer ) all week.

Golf TDi's are renowned for having great MPG figures. 1.9TD's give plenty of poke and loads of miles to a tank.
I've got the TDCi Sport Focus which is pretty good, but does get through the Diesel though. It costs about 9p per mile.

My other half uses it for her sales job and covers about 500 miles per week. Like anything else depends how you driveit. Anything between 30 to40 mpg. Really well finised inside with half leather and alcantara and all the gadgets plus 150bhp. Very hard to find though. I didnt know they existed ,just came accross it by chance last year. Have only seen one other one in autotrader in all that time. Bought for£11000 with 36000miles on the clock.
