Saw the everyday car thread and it got me thinking......

For those that travel a fair whack to work every day (20miles+) what is the best vehicle for this, second hand wise. In terms of overall including MPG, reliability and not being too mundane? (but not necessarilly focusing on either one)

306/406 TD, Mondeo Td, Transit vans? What? And how do those who do say 30-40 miles+ to work find it? Tiring? Annoying or ok?
