Heartbreaking
Question tho - if the pit bull is banned from being bred, bought/sold or exchanged since 1991 - how would someone have one? Obviously if the dog is over 16yrs old, then it's feasible, but if from 1991 onwards you weren't able to breed or sell pit bulls, surely anyone with a pit bull 15yrs old or younger would be liable for prosecution?

...horrible dogs are pitbulls....but its the favourite reply when you ask a bull terrier owner what there dog is. A rottweiler is predictable...if it aint brought up with children expect the worse if it gets to one and its crying.........a pitbull can be friendly one minute and deadly the next with no warning.

Heard this on the radio over the weekend, a very sad thing to happen, as you say especially this time of year!
R.I.P
Thrush The police etc are currently looking into if the dog was a pedigree mate and then will decide whether or not to prosecute the owner.

I take it you've owned a Pitbull to be able to say that? One was bred for fighting ANIMALS not humans Bred to be loving towards humans, a Rottie was bred to guard, 1 of the key things is to keep people away. Work it out And I like Rotties and I'm not putting them down it's just the way you say all pitbull are pure aggressive.. Bit out of order. Oh well.

Dogs and Cats are like children, you bring them up wrong, they will turn out wrong!!
The dog probably thought the little girl was a burglar or something, with the attack happening at 4.00am in the morning!!
Very sad though....my thoughts are with her parents.

May have been fireworks winding the dog up, but why the child had access to it at 4am is worrying

once again another child is killed by one of these types of dog,no doubt tomorrow papers will be full of the animal lovers saying that they are misunderstood, loving pets, itll die down for a while until another child is killed in future just so the stereotypical council deviant type with his sovereign ring on every finger can walk around with one of these beasts thinking he's hard as fuck.why have animals like these as pets in the first place ,especially when you have children in the family or close by.can the dog owner be charged with causing the death or failing to stop the death of a child caused by their 'pet'? .r.i.p.

why cant we implement some sort of dog licence?

The news reports were saying something about problems with the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 because it applies to attacks in public...and the attack took place in the owner's own home. I'm sure the courts will find some way of interpreting the legislation to read how it needs to...or it's absolutely worthless..but just something interesting if you're into statutory interpretation which I'm sad to say I am
I always thought the dog licence ideas were good though. There are people capable of keeping 'dangerous' dogs..because they treat them like the instinctive animals prone to agression that they are..and not like placid pets. It's untrained people keeping animals bred to kill as family pets that sleep on the bed that are the problem...rather the situation and not the dogs themselves in my opinion.
Even the softest dog can lose it....
I remember having my jack russel hanging off my arm when it went schitz and attacked our other dog...we just could not snap it out of it...and it hung onto my arm not realising I wasn't our other dog because it was so bloody wound up it didn't notice me pull it off.

Most loyal dog I ever had was a pitbull.
It's a shame they have the bad reputation they have now because low life I wanna be hard chavs/scum/drug dealers got a hold of them. To those clueless about the breed... Why is it that Pete the Pup from the Little Rascals is loved and adored by the kids? He's a pitbull, I mean, if they're so dangerous around one kid why put so many kids in harms way? Did you not notice that they started to get the bad reputation in the mid/late 80's because of the crack dealers started using them. Most if not all "Real Pitbulls" aren't huge terminator looking dogs, those most likely are inbred animals to give the appeal of a big muscular dog. How many have seen that vid of that fat muscled pit bull mating with another fat pitbull then throws up.. that shit isn't normal but what the fuck would clueless people know? They are overbreed, and the most throw away type dog. I'd have one over a Rotti anyday.. at least I wouldn't have to wonder if their hips are bad.
RIP to the baby girl this shouldn't have happend. This will no doubt put even more negativity on this awesome breed (which by the way they don't even know if it IS a pitbull but I guess it doesn't matter).

The dogs are bred for fighting..yes other dogs.....BUT if you buy one you must want them to fight or why buy one? IMAGE...that is all and that aggression can go over to humans unfortunately...they are a botched bred animal.
I have Rottweilers yes they are guards yes.....do they make me feel hard NO cause i aint got them for that...if i wanted to feel hard i'd by a dog that looked like a pitbull and walk it around the streets.

Looks like they are going to hammer the owner for this one. Good job too. Sounds like he was banned from keeping such dogs.
OK, so any dog can attack, but it seems that every child that has been mauled by a dog lately has been mauled by a Bull-terrier of some kind.
Outlaw ownership I say. I just hope they see the conviction through and that his family never forgive him.

I bet you everything i own that there have been more attacks on children from little dogs like jack russels, yorkshire terriers etc as they are very quick to get pissed off and bite. I know cause i had one hang off my nose when i was little.
You just dont hear about them cause a jack russel or whatever cant do as much damage as a pit or staff . Also the media are just wankers and pick on these types of dogs .
Alot of my mates have Staffs with small children including my gf's family. Her little sister who is only 4 now has grown up with their staff and never had any problems at all. She can swing on his tail try to rid him or whatever and the worst he will do is lick her. Staffs are very chilled dogs and dont get aggravated easily and love children.
Bet you didnt know the Staff is one of the only dogs that the Kennel Club will say is very good with children.
A quote from http://www.akc.org/breeds/staffordsh...ier/index.cfm:
Temperament
From the past history of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the modern dog draws its character of indomitable courage, high intelligence, and tenacity. This, coupled with its affection for its friends, and children in particular, its off-duty quietness and trustworthy stability, makes it a foremost all-purpose dog.
