Default BMW Convertibles - RESETTING ROLL OVER HOOPS question...

Evening all,

I know there's a lot of clever peeps on here, plus a few BMW owners, so a question for you...

How do I lower the roll over hoops on my M3 Cabby? Had a bit *cough* of a sideways moment at the Weston PF meet and things nearly went

Came on to a roundabout too quick (50/60 ish), the back slid wide, I dialled in the lock, then I think I backed off (as was at this point heading straight towards the central reservation of my exit road ) The car snapped round the otherway and I was then head on at the armco beside the exit road. Luckily (bit of an understatement) missed the barrier by a matter of an inch or two, sliding at least 20 feet sideways to the direction of the road.

No damage to the car thankfully, but a bit of a brown trouser moment. Lesson learned - I can't go round that roundabout as fast as I do in my 4x4 Cossie...I won't do that again.

The Roll over hoops popped up mid slide (good to know they work, proper shit me up when they popped up ), but they now won't go back down.

Anyone know how to reset them?

Technical diagrams of the incident will follow shortly as JJCoDex was following me in his M5 and saw all of it... I'm sure he'll be on his etch-a-sketch shortly!!!

I have a new respect for people who drive RWD cars properly!! I remember following you at Bedford behind that Palmersport Clio that rolled - you were sideways at 60mph + and didn't bin it. I always wanted a piece of the arse out action, but now I think I'll look into 4x4 ing the M3....

I've done my attempt at a technical diagram below...

It went something like this:

Thanks for the info - I don't have a manual at the mo (didn't come with the car ) but the tool kit under the boot lid is all there and seems intact.

Can you tell me what it says to do? At the mo the hoops are pressing against the rear window and I don't want to stretch the hood permanently!

Any help greatly appreciated! Tried joining the forum you mentioned on 11/11/06, got an email confirming I had signed up, but it said an Admin guy would have to authorise my account. Still not been done 16 days later I can't get on there at the mo hence asking on here...

Cheers
Si

My Saph is not entirely standard in the handling stakes (Coilovers, thicker ARB, Adjustable TCAs, R888s etc), my M3 is totally stock. For a factory car it drives and grips at the front superbly, but the back is a bit tail happy (no traction control AT ALL).

I have Pirelli P Zero Rosso on the front (ACE TYRE) and Kumho Ecstas on the back - (Budget big tyres)--- Fitted by the previous owner and deffo not my choice.

However I can't blame the slide on the car - I was going too quickly.

It does handle well, I just need to learn how to handle IT!

The Cossie on the other hand I just throw around and hoof it, and it goes pretty much where I point it, hence why I love 4x4.

You must be crazy

I'll take you up on that for sure matey Promise I'll drive it sensibly though... I learnt a lesson tonight that's for sure.

If I get mine back on the road and running proper power you're welcome for a spin too (it'll be good to compare the two approaches to fast track cars!)

Properly eventful at weston tonight

James certainly drives that M5 with a fair bit of commitment for such a big car, he seems to have got his share of talent and yours si

Hi Si

Much better qualit drawings today. I am impressed.

I think your 50-60 is slightly conservative!!! it felt much quicker when we were following you.

The headrests shoot out within 3/10tenths of a second when they sense an imminent rollover!!!!

Anyway, reset procedure is as follows form the TIS tech manual.

That show the special tool that should be in your toll kit. These are the destructions..

BTW, after 248 deployments it needs to be serviced! try not to do it again...

Hope this helps (if you cant read the pics to well ping me an email and i will forward the docs direct)

Mate, there was nothing wrong with the etch-a-sketch, it was the twat using it!!!! PMSL (a bit like your home networking skills!!!!). And besides, you know as well as I do that it was impossible to represent the image in any more detail than I did!!! PMSL

Top night in the M5 - good to see the old girl can still turn heads when required!

Picture of the mark made by BOTH his front wheels (shows how perfectly perpendicular to the barrier he was there is only one mark from both of them!)

No word of a lie, there was no more than a rizla paper between the front bumper and the barrier - quality commitment!

Agree with bosch about the roof though

If:
a) it was the back of the car
b) it was intended
c) he could do it again

Then yes, but as it is the "dont get in a rwd car with him EVER" approach is probably a better one

is this a case now that M3 owners should be avoided at all costs then?

or should we just treat them like fireworks? set them off and retreat to a safe distance?

PMSL - you gotta learn somehow though! Perhaps somewhere with a little more space would be good I must admit!

I just remember him saying before he went out "there will be none of that sideways stuff you did" !!

Just before it occurred, i remember thinking "fair play fella, thats committed - uh oh - aha - oh bugger - oh shite - thank christ for that - phew!"

Nothing wrong with the car, just a case of the driver having a little more ambition than talent in this instance.

Something most people have done im sure, just good that lady luck was smiling at simon, well in fact, she was on here knees noshing away and swallowed for him in fact!

I think most people who drive hard have had similar or worse happen, as you say, all part of learning

If that was his idea of "not sideways" i think i will avoid the passenger seat next time he IS intending to get the arse out, lol

Absolutely. I sat there thinking how the hell did he not hit that barrier. If you revist your photo of the skids you actually see the barrier is slightly dinged in where the tyre skids are!

wonder if another chopped up M3 has done the same?? If that ding wasnt there if would have had a few microns of Estoril blue smeared down its galvanised face!

Still, i am waiting for the updated etch-a-sketch dwg.

(JJ ps, my networking skills (and not just IT ones) are legendary. you want somthing proper f$cked up, just let me at it!!)
