Loosen the engine mounts from the crossmember as they get very tight even with the top nuts removed

Subframe needs to be off, not loose, i.e. no bolts holding it to the chassis, use a jack to hold up the subframe, remove the 4 bolts, and then let the jack down, don't forget to undo the steering coupling next to the bulkhead, + good luck!

You should have left the head on and removed all a in one, i did it that way once last year, never again! I struggled my nuts off to remove it, it just wouldn't come out for some reason! Try a crow bar in the between the engine and gearbox, work both sides until it is totally free, do you have another jack supporting the gearbox?

but also gives you an idea for nxt time

id be going to find a trolley aswell

as you can do it this way refitting the lot aswell

except you will have the engine cradle on so it can be lifted straight up

Can you not put the head back on as a temporary measure? If the gearbox is clear, and the subframe removed from car, then it can't foul anything else

I have done it this way about 6 times in the past 2 years with my own 4x4, only time i struggled was when i didnt have the head on (because i had bent all my exhaust valves )

Removing the diff in the car is a PAIN in the RS!

why would i put head back on mate?

i have the straps around the engine mounts to lift the block out but the diff is fouling the subframe
surely i can move the sub forward if i remove p/s pipes

To give you more leverage, those lifting eye thingies attatched to the head were designed for this very purpose Will take about 2 minutes to put it back on and nip up the old head bolts

If you remove the p/s pipes there is nothing to stop you removing the subframe completley, I hate taking the engine out of mine

i'm sure you will get it done

this is by far the easiest option

trouble is im doint it at work and dont wanna take one of the lifts, where pretty busy at the mo but i could do that over weekend and replace the subframe etc whilst im building the engine so it can be pushed out.

think im gonna go in early and rebuild it

We removed my engine out of my 4x4 Saph Cossie about 8 weeks ago and thankfully didnt have any of these problems

Took gearbox out, removed head, disconected all plumbing (water, oil, pas etc) then just lifted the block, sump and front diff off the engine bed straight out of the top, absolutely no bother... just need to lift it out with the bulkhead end down slightly so the front clears the engine bed.
