Default Home Insurance & how can I find out how old the house is

Well for those of you that don't know, me and Stu have had an offer accepted on a house.....it is all going through as we speak....all the searches are being done etc...but we need to sort home insurance...

So who is best/cheapest and who should we steer clear of??

The ones coming up mainly are Halifax, Tescos, Natwest and Norwich Union.....i know Tescos are pritty cheap but thought it best to see what you lot think first

I also need to find out when it was built, how could i find this out???

my tools whilst i am working on the car on the driveway..

They have add on packages you can put onto your policy.

We just changed to Direct Line from Norwich Union and saved £90 on better cover.

We only decided to look around because Norwich are moving another 4000 jobs overseas.

CIS do pretty good cover, cut a brick in half and count how many rings there are to find out how old the house is.

We're with Zurich too.

Do NOT go with Norwich Union! The dealings I had with them last year with a claim were just short of being unbelievable - they are the most inept company I have ever come across!

i wouldn't recommend abby national either, they refused to pay out over a burst pipe in the attic due to "someone toehr than their approved people coming out and turning the tap off" like me
cost £4k all in to get everythign sorted and then, when we went to make the claim they said ebacuse we hadn't called out one of their guys to turn the water off they wern't going to pay
needless to say, we fooked them right off there and then and switch to the halifax, half the price, double the cover

if you have a competen soliciter dealing with the ouse move stuff they should be able to get hold of the proper deeds to sa who's owned the hosue before etc, when it was built, bill of sales and stuff too
first house was built in 1929, second house was built in 1960 (and cost £5k back then )

you should also be looking for other stuff like when it was wired, double glazing, any outstanding debts on the property, any free offers from the council to change stuff over (grants etc)

also be aware that certain mortgage providers will want you to take insurance with them in order to qualify for their mortgages so clear that up before you do anything else

good luck

Once you get a copy of the survey the approximate year of build will be detailed on there.

With House & Contents Insurance remember that cheaper is not always better.

The site above is a search engine for the best rates on things like Insurance.

IIRC Abbey have one of the best policies on the market, and are competitively priced. Nationwide also do a good policy at a good price.

Congrats on finding a house, bet you cant wait to finally have your own place
