Does anybody know if the mobile speed vans give you the same tolerance as fixed camera's, I.E 10% of the speed limit +2mph?

I was going down a dual carriage way the other day (70 limit) and the needle was just shy of 80 when i spotted a van, in reality i would of been doing about 75mph, so if theres no leniancy on it looks like ive got another 3 points

i think they do, watched one of them police shows on sky and the chap operating it said his guidelines were 10% + 4mph. I would guess that would change on area etc but you might of got away with it!!

Each Police Force has its own tolerance levels. A lot of areas operate zero tolerance to speeding.

im not sure on that mate i was doing 44mph in a 40 once
seen the mobile camra van and very quick braked hard
down to 40 mph but nothing ever come of it so it may be
the same dude.

I've seen lots of things on the fixed camera tolerances. And with your lucky escape, i'd say there was a tolerance there aswell, a mibile van will have your speed well before you spot it

The mobile vans definetely have a tolerance level, but as said is is set by wither the operator, or the force he is working for...

You'll just have to cross ya fingers and hope nothing comes through...



If you do get busted, ask for a piccy, normally they show the car of quite well

Tbh theres so many factors (operator guidlines, other traffic, speedo accuracy) involved trying to work out if you were done or not, just wait you 14 days and hope and pray nothing drops through the letter box.

okay i know excessive speeding is not good but recently in the sun paper there was a case where the judge ordered the car to crushed too is this true

Chip, you shouldn't tar all Police with the same brush. If you were the victim of a crime you would want a Police response.

No they don't. The ACPO guidance is 10 % + 2 mph, whether it be mobile camera, fixed camera, vascar, radar, laser etc etc.

I know the Police get some stick over mobile speed cameras, and I'm not defending the camera safety partnerships but I never hear anyone complaining to the Health Authority,the CPS, their local council, Highways Agency etc about the use of the cameras. These are the bodies that make up the partnership and have an equal standing with the Police when decisions are made about operating the mobile cameras.

How come someone on MLR received a NIP this week for doing 32mph in a 30? So the ACPO guidance means naff all and that zero tolerance is being applied in some areas.

Actually, it can be up to 6 months and they can still prosecute for it.

A mate of mine got one thru a couple of days before the 6 months would've been up

A NIP has to be sent within 14 days, in circumstances in which an oral notice is not given at the time, then either a summons or a written notice of intended prosecution must be served within 14 days.
If you have not been given the notice within 14 days (ignoring the day of the offence) then they cannot proceed against you, unless your car is a company car or is owned by a finance/lease company and who need more time to ascertain who was driving because of it not being owned by an individual, but the NIP still has to be issued within 14 days to the registered keeper.

I got done by a camera van doing 69 mph in the middle of nowhere (warwickshire A329) and the limit was 60 mph.I thought 10 per cent plus three covered me but the lard arse copper did me.Scum bag.

i ve been told by a police officer down with me, that you can do 35mph in a 30 mph zone, but if you do 36 mph in a 30mph zone the camera van will pick you up for it and you be done, he told me you can go 5mph over the speed limit but you cant go 6mph over in a 30mph or a 40mph zone, on motorways he said we leave you go 6mph over but if you do7mph or over they would be done for speeding, if its right or wrong i dont know but he works the camera van from our local station

Each police area will have different tolerances, as someone mentioned earlier and a different set of fines. I read somewhere that some forces give you the opportunity to do a speed awareness course instead of getting points on your licence.

No 2 police force areas will be the same.

Its not only the tollerances and guidlines to watch out for but conditions too. Dont forget if its peeing down and you are 5 over they still might pull you in for it.

Sounds obvious I know but i dont think anyone has mentioned it yet.

Theres no such thing as different fines. The standard and only fine you can get from an endorsable fixed penalty for speeding is £60.

Some forces do offer driver improvement / speed awareness courses instead of the points and this may be rolled out nationally.
