I just learnt a valuable lesson.....
Bloody hell.... Went to take a corner in second and as I went round I got proper sideways, I went to pull it back in but it snapped the other way. I lost it and slid across the road and up onto the grass in front of a church.
Heart's racing, adrenaline's pumping and I'm shaking all over! Totally didn't think I'd given it that much right foot..... Just glad there was no one around and I didn't do any damage.
That will teach me to be more careful in future

What car you got now then?
You was on the throttle and it went sideways?
Rear drive then.
And let off sharply as it did, giving lift off oversteer.
If was front drive itd not oversteer on the throttle, just understeer like fook, but itd still snap back when lifting off, poss spinning you out.

E36 325i Coupe Steve.
I'm not really used to going sideways yet
Once I went up on the grass I thought that was it. Luckily it's a very low kerb so no damage.

I always thought when get it sideways the best thing to do is keep it planted so you dont lose total control and lose the back end completely, but my mate said he got told at a knockhill driving day to dip the clutch, suerly much of the same effect
DogSmoke, That was lucky, do you think if you hit the church you'd still believe in god?

S13s have got way more lock than most cars, but i used to spin way too much when drifting as i used too much gas.
Would hold the drift for ages, but then still spin at end.
If you keep the gas in you will keep it sideways too, and TBh, he wants traction back so he stops poohing his pants.
Dip the clutch? Thats just the same as letting off! And when he undipped it it would kick out again!
Kicking the clutch is a good way of getting a car to lose traction, not get it back!
Best way is just let off gently, and be good with the steering!
Practice at a drift sorta day is best way to learn quick, as you can dilberatley get it out of shape and learn to not fuck up and spin out.
Once you can hold a drift, you could easy get yourself out of sticky situations like youve jus been in.

Hence a lot of the times, you'll hear the drifters feathering the throttle to keep the wheels from gaining traction and gripping, but not so much that it overcomes the opposite lock........

Cheers steve, i didnt mean kick the clutch, i meant dip it completely, get traction back, lift off the throtle, lift clutch, and off you go. kicking would just make you lose traction again as you mention!
I thought the worst thing to do is lift off, as when you do, the back end doesnt want to try and go straight again, it jus wants to follow it's path and overtake you. I would of kept my foot where it was, slowly lifting off and controling it rather than pooing it, lifting off and spinning!
Ofcourse never having drifted properly or got a car sideways properly i am only guessing

All begners to rwd will do what you did,
its just the learning curve.
My mate years ago was into minis and he had some fast one's I was into MK11 escorts, so one day he bought a 1600 sport. 3 day later into was in a wall.
did the same thing and over corrected but he hit a wall

thing is after all the letting off the throttle you will need to play with the steering to make a smooth transfer back to normal plain, if you have turned in to thr slide and released the power to gain grip, as soon as it does, you will spit your self out the other way due to the front wheels still being pointed into the slide, so both need to be equaly controlled to control the slide....

my advice is to find a carpark and practice so that next time it happens by accident when youre not expecting it, you know what to do. its all well and good knowing the theory, but practice is whats needed.

Done this many a time myself when i was learning Its a kneejerk reaction to lift completly off and this is last thing you want to do really. If its not too sideways feathering the throttle searching for just the right amount of grip/slip works a treat. If its a tad outta control or stepped out by accident then dipping the clutch is then next best thing, this balances the car out better than being on gas or engine breaking and hepls to regain some form of control. An lsd will help massivly when trying to drift/powerslide properly, has the beemer got one?
If all fails hold the fuck on and pray you dont hit anything

Which is what he and most people do, and then crash
Tho its far better than plain old lifting off i guess, so not bad advice for beginners maybe.
But at the same time, IMO best of be taught the proper way from the start.

gurnE, ive always thought of a tankslapper as the sudden reaction you get when you lift off mid-oversteer and the car spins the other way.
is it a bike term too?

A rapid side-to-side oscillation of the front wheel of a motorcycle, where the handlebars literally 'slap' the gas tank due to insufficient road grip on the front tyre.

I went back to see the area I landed
Found a front mud flap that I didn't realise I'd ripped off. Need to find out how to get the bolt out now and how to reattach it!

Same sort of thing happened to me after id done a deal to sell my Saph. The buyer was coming to pick it up the next day, thought to myself i'll just go for one last blast before shes gone Was nearly one too many!
Damp road, uphill, slight bend foot to the floor in 3rd gear. Went one way then snapped the other. Think I just kept it on the road by backing off and being quick on the wheel, all happens so fast though! Had it sideways before but that was the closest id come to crashing it.
Would of made for an interesting conversation with the buyer thats for sure
