96-02 RANGE ROVER 2.5 DSE...ANY BODY HAD ONE?
#4
I drove my mates 1800 mile old 2.5 from Stranraer to Dover then over to Paris and back IIRC it returned good gas mileage [30+mpg overall] . Its done 48k now and the only hassle was a problem with the rear window/tailgate release playing up now and then. OH and the bonnets are a bit flimsy and while cruising you become aware that they move slightly.

Have a look for a thread on Range Rovers within the past 2 weeks in here. Lots of tips in there as someone else was looking at one.
Neighbour had the DSE and I wouldnt touch any of them with a barge pole after seeing the problems he had.

I had a 2000 one last year, loved the car but make sure you get one with warrenty..............................You WILL be using it.
I had the engine blow up
ABS faults every month
Air suspention faults every month
Door locks playing up
Air bags lights coming on all the time
And they lose money quicker than Nick Leeson at the stock market.........I lost 6k in 10 months on it
I was seeing 32mpg round town and 48mpg on 300 mile trips
Here it is

Depends why you want one , i bought a 98 R DSE in 2001 and used it as a towcar for 5 years, best car ive ever owned , expensive when it went wrong but worth every penny . Had mine , ahem , adjusted for performance as the std one wouldn't pull the skin of a sausage , gave 35mpg when i towed a trailer to Scotland and back at 85 mph .
Wish i'd never sold it but had to before it was worth jack shit .
If youre buying it for another reason then consider the costs first !

i bought one and it was shit-unbelievably slow-difficult to start from hot and not too good on fuel.all electrics are flimsy.
took another in p/x last year-exactly the same hot starting fault,it had a little more power, but wouldnt buy one for myself-even though they do look cool

We went on a trip to landrover with work, the online QA inspection is a joke, no wonder they have problems. When it was shift change over the line carried on and half the shift coming in wasnt even there yet so about a dozen cars went through without even a glance
one lad went for a shit and again about 10 cars went past before he came back, yet nobody took him off to check the cars while he was in the shitter
then people winge about the british car industry going down the pan, surprise surprise

Now over on the New Range Rover, built with better parts, same production management problems. i.e., numbers out the door at all costs.

Ours averaged very low 20s mpg. They're slow and have to work hard on the motorway. The last one we had of that shape had some minor air suspension and electrical issues (continually discharged battery), traded it in for a new one before the dealer managed to find out what was wrong with it. One before that needed a new auto box when it was about six months old.
The current-shape one is leagues ahead, but the diesels are still underpowered (there's a V8 diesel out this year).
Oh, and don't put filthy chav 22"s on it (I still haven't worked out why Streatham gangsters need a Range Rover).

I know people that work/ed on the track at Solihull and to be honest you could swap a £5 note with em for a bag of fresh air and they'd think they'd got the better deal.
Tiffs was a nice one,not bad at all... but the trouble he had was not worth it in the long run.
Gotta remember they may have BMW engines but they were built and designed by Rover before BMW took over- so as you can imagine they go wrong like rovers and feel like them inside.

You've compromised the car's very purpose by fitting them, because it would now have trouble mounting a kerb, and if it did manage to, it would get stuck on the grass verge.

This is my Range with 20 inch wheels genuine LR ones i add.
I have owned a 38A but was a 4.0 SE & they do suffer from various problems
Blend motors, air suspension as examples.
The old 2.5 BMW diesel was, i believe derived from the marine engine, & will return abt 22mpg but as stated is underpowered.
Mine runs the new BMW 3.0 diesel &is plenty performance for a beast of its size.
I dont drive ot slowly & it returns 19.7 round town - up to 24/5 on long motorway runs
Would not see the point in running a V8 petrol ever again
