Sorry if I steal your thread Ben, but since we are in discussion of coilovers to the Sierra would you recommend to strength the wish bones in back with more welding? If yes, where is the most ideal place to do so?

By wishbones do you mean the semi trailing arms ?, if so no they are plenty strong enough.
Some say that you need to strengthen the tower tops/area, where the bolt that secures the top of the shock to the body is, I never have myself and despite having towed like this never had any problem.
I would defo recommend a strut brace here though, ideally triangulated from the tower area to the centre of the boot floor under the strut brace, but even a staright strut brace would be a wise move as the suspension movement will try to impart a force pushing the towers towards each other.

Thanks tabetha. Yep, I mean the semi trailing arms. I've seen some that has strengthen the area around the lower shock mount so I was just curious if this was ideal place to do it or somewhere else on the arms. I have never used coilovers on none of my Fords yet so therefore I'm curious since I've read alot about it. How does a triangulated strut brace looks like?

I can see why you would think they might need strengthening, but never seen it myself, unless it is a rally car of course or something like that.
The triangulated rear brace is a simple affair with a straight bar going across the space between the struts mount bolts inside boot, then imagine a area on the boot floormid way between the two ends of the straight bar, two extra bars come from these points and meet at the centre point on the boot floor, forming a triangle shape, hence it's name, debateable whether it is needed on a road car, but it can't hurt, and looks cool!!

i bought a set of gaz coilovers earlier this year,my car only gets wet when i wash it and its only done around 1300 miles with them on and they look red rotten.very thin nickel plating.gaz have offered to replate them but who will pay to have them taken off,posted,refitted then the tracking and corner weighting done?

When i had my beam all apart i welded up mine on the advice that paul@northyorks gave me.
Made up a lovely bit off plate, I'll take a few pics tomorow to explain how i done it.
But the springs i have are v hard...................

my 3dr see`s similar road use and my gaz coilovers are fine,i would suggest going back to them and asking them as initial fitting will have been payed for also,so only fair they contribute to removal and refit.

i have the same problem with electrical materials that go faulty i just tell my suppliers i want some materials to cover my time or i go elsewhere in future (not much use in this situation i now realise!!)

soryy for the hi jack but would avo/gaz coilovers fit onto a non cosworth sierra???

Yes, buy if you buy the cosworth model, you'll need to install a cosworth spindle. Xr4 and sierra spindles are different. For the rear you'll need to so something like this to capitalize:



I have AVOs in my XR4Ti and changed to a cossie front spindle. Easy to do in the grand scheme of things.
