Default St170 mods advice

Hi everyone

After new brakes and saw the Zero Sixty 300mm's on PumaSpeed. Will these be any good using the existing calliper s?

Also which full system and sports cat? I seen the milltek but at around £800 is a bit pricey

Thinking of bookin it into Northampton Motorsport as they seem to know a thing or two about these engines to free up a few horses

pumaspeed are a very overated company with poor workmanship from what I have seen on many occasions, A bluefin also helps but the st170 is never going to set the performance figures alight as a standard 170 will normally be well under the 170hp as claimed by ford

Default ST170 performance

Hi,
Recently became an ST170 ('54 plate) owner and all in quite happy with it except for the performance. I was expecting 170bhp in a relatively small light body to be quite nippy. However, I can't help feeling short changed - the engine seems to be in good health, starts easily, good oil pressure, no smoke / noises etc, but even in 2nd gear does not want to rev beyond 5000rpm. It sounds extremely laboured when pushed hard, even though it does pull well low down. Does this sound "normal"? I understand this engine uses variable valve timing - when does this kick in and do you feel it (as is the case in other cars)?
Cheers,
Phil.

Well from my experience my car feels every bit of 170bhp (or there abouts)

I used to own a civic type r and I'd say the engine in the st170 shares similar characteristics in the way it delivers the power just not as good. Power really comes in around 5k all the way to the redline. I had an audi a3 behind me the other day, don't know what it was but he stuck with me until 3rd gear when I started to pull away, I then pulled in to let him passed before hitting silly speeds. It was the new shape so 2.0T or 3.2v6? The st170 is a great car in my opinion

That's interesting, do you feel the variable valve timing coming in - my car is as you would expect low down in the rev range, but seems a bit flat at the top end. Is it possible that the VVT is not working - has anyone come across this before? Is the VVT progressive or "on-off"? The EML is not on so I would assume there will not be any fault codes in the ecu.

St170 has sports cat as std so either decat or stick with std.

St170 has 170ps not bhp so thats 167bhp

Longlife can make you a miltek system for £300 inc fexi

And so on.

I just bought a Full Piper exhaust system for mine brand new for £220 delivered, Demon Tweeks had an offer on ebay, not major loud, but still sounds good when giving it some beans..

Also bought a toyo 4-2-1 Manifold off ebay for £100, not sure if it gives any gains, but it made the engine bay look better.

Didn't know the ST170 came as standard with a sports cat, saved me a few hundred quid there, as I was looking at a sports cat next.

Not bad then.

Keep your std manifold as ebay cheaps tend to crack, you wont really get any better than the std manifold.

Yeah sports as std, iirc decat on these causes a loss in bhp and gain in torque or the otherway round lol, decat prices have gone up thay used to be £60 when I had a focus lol.

You don't feel the variable intake runners opening, at 5k you'll hear a slight change in tone in the revs.
Common failure points on these that tie in with the lack of power is the inlet manifold runner control failing, it can either fail open or shut. Other symptoms will be very excessive fuel consumption. The standard control cam is plastic too that pulls the cable it snaps, there are replacement billet ones available.

Gearing is very tall on these too, you have to keep them at the top of the rev range to keep them on the boil. Off the line it won't set any records. Through the box 3rd to 5th is where they're at their best.

Yeah I was happy,

I let them keep the standard manifold for the scrap man (got me a cheaper fitting cost) I had a toyo sport manifold on my saxo with no problems so hopefully have the same results here,

would never go full decat, my luck would be a vosa truck parked on the way to work.. so Sports cat would of been what I was looking for, but seeing as it has one saves me even looking

When I purchased my Focus, he mentioned the manifold Control thing, and showed me receipts for I think about £220, and he was saying it never had any dash lights on, so I would say its worth getting a code reader on a car if you think its loosing power. lot of money to spend if that's not the issue though

No, that's not normal. It should rev past 5k easily.

Have it checked out.

could easliy pass 5k revs.

Best mod ive done was manifold.

remap and exhaust is all.thats worth doing.
oil cooler with a thrmostat be a decent upgrade if you rag it around.

Then turbo/supercharge.

ive had mine a year. lovely drive of a car but.mpgs are shocking. Use it as a toy as it become a bit of a buffy.
