Default Focus ST170, *PROBLEM SORTED*

I know there are various threads about this but none of them ever seem to post if they have solved the problem or not???

Right, here we go,

My st170 stutters/misfires/jumps at around 4K revs. In neutral it wont rev to the limit either.

There are NO management lights on the dash and the IMCR module is working as ive checked by riving the car and watching the flap end move. I am getting it put on diagnostics tomorrow to see if that shows anything.

I am begining to think this could be the fuel pump but at £170 i want to make sure first before I shell out on one.

Any help greatfully recieved.

As rich says, fuel pump is likely, but change the coil pack first as its cheaper

After all the searching ive done on the net, ive never found someone with a similar problem where the coil pack has actually solved it.

Im going to change the fuel fiter tomorrow night when im at work as looking through the service history it never sems to have had it replaced.

Well i was out in it this morning and it was fine. Went to go to work in it at 16.00 and it wouldn't start, just turns over but dosnt fire. Ill stick 2 gallons of petrol in it in the morning and see if its that and if not its going back as i only bought it on friday.

If its packed up completely its a good time to remove a spark plug and try it on all the leads to see if your getting a spark. ST170's have a few teething problems but once you put them to bed they are good cars to own. In my 2 years of ST170 ownership i have only had to change the clutch, disks and pads. I give the car a full service every 5000miles using genuine parts and the car never skips a beat.

my 2 suggestions would have been blocked cat or cracked fuel pump.

hopefully its just the fuel pump as replacing both is very costly!!

Its the fuel pump control module, not the pump. As for cost, it dosnt matter as I only bought the car a week ago so all work is under waranty

Well...., fitted the Fuel pump control module and guess what? Nothing, still wont fire. There seems to be no comunication between the ecu and the Module so the next step is to stace all the wiring to check for breaks and then pin check the ECU. The car is running at the min though with an ignition live to the pump relay, not ideal but it runs perfect and gets me about until we work out what the problem is.

I will update as and when there is progress.

could it be a fualt with the ecu itself. for some reason my mates st170 ecu died when he fitted ngk plugs weirdly but i dont know if it would still run a bit or not.

dont know if its like the diesel injectors but could the module need recoding to the ecu?

Thats the second time i have heard of the blackoak ECU burning out after an incorrect spark plug change?????? your only meant to use ford plugs and you need to make sure they supply the right ones also as the ST170 has different plugs to all other models. Very strange it effects the ECU as it makes no sense??. The Blackoak is quite temperemental, i know the earlier models had to have an updated software version put on them.

Well its packed in again. The sparky who was looking at it cant come back till at least Monday. Enough is enough so its going to a garage to be repaired. At least I can get a courtesy car so ill be mobile. Also on the plus side, its under warrenty so its all paid for.

My bet is either fuel pump or ECU.

at least its under warrenty.

st170's are great cars when they work but theres soo much that goes wrong on them i wont ever buy one!

Well i have the car back now. It turned out to be the Fuel pump control module as first thought only we didnt realise it had to be coded to the car (and neither did ford when we spoke to them for info).
Its all sorted now and goes like a train right through the rev range. People say these cars are slow for what they are but to be honest, im really impressed how it goes.

Just got to get Bluefin fitted now

these silly modern cars needing everything coding to the ecu. its all a sodding con so you have to take it to a main dealer and pay well over the odds.
