Default Track car potential?

I have been wanting to 'build' a track car for years now and get out there and do some track time as I live quite close to brands and Lyden hill I dont see why not!

I have been offered a v cheap T reg 1.8 petrol Focus, this seems perfect as a base to build on over time as i appreciate things dont happen over night HOWEVER it is a 5 door, is this really an issue for a track car as from what ive seen people seem to turn their noses up at 5dr cars?! (i appreciate it dosent look as good and may be slightly heavier but not by much)

Just want to get an idea of what people thought about this, shall i go for it?

It could be a good base dependant on what you call cheap and what sort of car you are getting?
Mileage? Condition? etc etc
or would it be cheaper to purchase a clio 172/182 that's already stripped with set of springs and dampers and be relatively cheap to maintain
Wereas a focus if it needs new bushes all round that could prove expensive due to the amount of bushes that are on the rear

The problem lies with, when you realise that you want to go faster. It happens very quickly generally and your options will be pretty limited unfortunately. I'm sure you'll be able to have fun in it but I would think you'll soon get fed up with letting cars pass you. Perhaps look at other cheap cars as a base instead or go for a cheap RWD for more fun.

i agree with the power thing. you will feel the urge for more power and it happens to us all. but if what you have is your only option then the focus to me is the best handling car for the money. even with a 1.8 though if you gut it and get it handling spot on you will have a great time.

The focus is a good option for a track car, but it does get expensive quick, don't be put off by a more door, the current btcc focus and many of the global rally cross cars are currently five door body shells
