Hi
As topic says. I ordered up a 82 degree sierra thermostat and a cossie 4x4 fan switch. The fan switch was a perfect fit but the thermostat didn't fit at all. so someone has got their information wrong

DONT PANIC!
Right, take a look at the stat - you'll se on the flat edge, a line. Cut along this line, all the way around. You'll remove about 2mm from the diameter of the stat, without affecting it in any other way at all. It will now fit into the housing. A Ford gasket ring is quite thick so you may have trouble gettign the clip in. You can either find a thinner rubber ring, or use gasket sealant suitable for such a job - Loctite Gasket number 2 is what I used.
Edit - just noticed from the pics, that the line is quite clearly visible. Due to the nature of the clip, you dont have to follow the line exactly round, just thats about where you need to cut. It takes about 3 minutes with a Dremel wheel.
Also, it certainly is an 82 deg. stat - take a close look it should have it stamped on it.

I'll change the topic, but it still seems weird that you have to mod the thermostat.

Your best off using a dremel really, I dont think tin snips would be very easy. I used a cutting wheel, then a stone to clean up the edges. It's a pain to get the clip in securely, you have to use the stone to grind it down a little until the clip fits in its groove nicely, and a bit of muscle with a big screwdriver to push the clip in.
A XR2i one will fit straight in, as it's also for a CVH. It is in fact the exact same part number as the one for ERST. TBH I just ordered through a mate at Ford the 82deg Sierra item (it was the only one in the Ford catalog with 82deg that I could find), and when it arrived cut it down and stuck it in. It's not a hard job at all really. Just takes a bit of patience and a good dremel.
Why nobody mentioned the modding - well I just saw it as another bit of fun to do after work, I mod practically every part that I get to try to make it better in some way (more often than not it involves the Dremel
) - but I'm like that I guess....I prefer to spend thousands building a ZVH, instead of just buying an old Audi Turbo.

You'll have to shout louder mate! I didn't realise that.
But us Europeans, we generally have to rely on Ford - you don't realise just how hard it is on the mainland, there is a completely different attitude to cars and modding here. I'm sure if you knew the part number, you could go to Merc, Audi, Scania or wherever and get the part that will fit - it's finding that number that is impossible. People on the parts desk have no idea and are not willing to help - an autoparts shop is even worse. They will generally throw a 1000 page catalog in front of you and tell you to find them the number
People in the know are very thin on the ground, and tend to remain silent. I myself can only get Ford part numbers, by looking through the catalog, and am happy to post them up if someone asks...
Necessity is the mother of invention, it's all part of the fun IMHO.

just walk into halfords and buy a thermostat for a FORD PUMA 1.7
i did this today, and it fitted straight in... its STAMPED with 82 degress...
just the job, and i even swapped the boxes over, so i paid for a RST stat (Ł4.49) and got the gaskets, clip and ring...
and now it runs just below NORM

if u bought off mr c it would save u a trip 2 halfords u swapped the boxes round isnt that just the same as theft? and sum 1 else is gna get the wrong thermostat right?

Wish I'd known that could have saved some trouble. Unfortunately most of the stats listed in the Ford catalog are without the temperature. The only one I found which had 82deg listed was the Sierra item pictured above, which other people have spoken about on the forum.
Here's the FINIS for the Puma stat, it is the only one I have listed for the Puma:

Got it sorted today. Got the dremel out and made it fit. Car now runs alot cooler that before and its all good

Standard one is more than 88...it should be stamped on it but iirc it is in the 90's
Basically you're just increasing the time it takes before temperatures get critical. It's no solution to an overheating problem - for that you need a good radiator (GRS or similarwith a really efficient core) and a good fan or two to get cold air through it while sitting at the lights. A really good radiator isn't that expensive either.

I didnt missunderstand you - it cuts in (turns the fan on) at 86deg. It will be stamped on the side with this figure. As it cools the engine, it cuts out again at about 82 degrees. A combination of the 2 parts will try to keep the engine between 82 and 86 degrees.
If you got connections at Ford, the stats cost about 4 quid. And for about 20p you can get a new fibre washer for your new switch - 6005731.
