lol, cheers for the sympathy fella I hope its the only damage too mate, i think it will be the rocker still looks in one piece and the compression test was good..... yet another oil change when its repaired i guess....

Sorry to do a thread steal Stuart!

But, how do people normally set about repairing the above? literally drill out thread, helicoil and a new stud? should a be a good boy and take the head off to do it

Good stuff, so long as you test the stuff properly and take a logical approach to the design you should be fine.

I know! i'm yet to take the rocker cover off and have look

Gutted for you rob

Easiest repair would be a helicoil or wire Inserr,be careful as the sizes are slightly different with drillng/tapping
The insert to use would be a spiralock, only downside is you will not be able to take the stud out again!

Or something we use in the aerospace industry

Rosan inserts

We use these in the damper housing for landing legs, every commercial aircraft has one of these fitted

Downside is it would he a time consuming job to machine and install as the locking ring needs pressing in

I've helicoiled them in the past with no detriment. Just the usual off the shelf helicoil.

I still can't understand why people manage to snap rockers. Studs pulling out I can half understand as they are always under tension and the soft ally head can weaken but I can't understand how the rockers actually break.

I'd have got fucked right off a long time ago if i was you mate and scrapped the cvh idea, mine used to break things often enough with less bhp than yours lol!
As much as i love the cvh engine in an rst as it's inkeeping with the car imo over a zetec/zvh, getting big power builds to stay together isn't easy....if i was gonna go for 300+ it'd have to be a zetec now!

Rob,
I didnt do it with the head fitted but if you take the cam out and are extremely thorough with removing the swarf after drilling/tapping you could do it in situ maybe?! But it does make a right mess.

Cheers for the reply s guys,

Nigel those inserts do look very tasty!, Karlos, when i've got the rocker cover off and seen what damage its caused i'll take a view on whether to do it fitted or not realistically i'd like to do them all which i wouldn't do with the head fitted.

Jano, that rocker looks as if its been battered! are you sure the stud didn't pull out and the rocker rattled around the cam gear until it was broken?

Weird resonance in the springs could cause the collet to dislodge and the valve to drop, maybe this broke the rocker at the same time?

Dazc did you helicoil with the head fitted?

I know im just talking my self into it gently... with a new bottom end nearly run in i think its worth the hassle of doing it properly...

Not the right time to be spending more money on the car either... new head gasket and studs

rob
dont even think about doing it in situ
you will never catch all the swarf and there will be very fine bits of swarf that will never get picked up

Rob the parts i have shown are from different engines. The studs had no issues on any of the engines.

Lol, i did conceder this, and cutting the hoover extension to sit right under the hole.... but i've talked my self into doing it the hard way plus the ear ache i would get for 'modifying' the hoover lol

Its taken a few days but thats what im going to do no point in spending this many hours blueprinting and building and pouring a cup of swarf into the sumpAny ideas on who stocks the rosan inserts? If im doing it i may as well do them all properly.

Jano, shit thats not good!

I would certainly look at using a Timecert insert for rocker arm stud threads.

We use these for 911 Porsche magnesium cases for the head studs - they pull out from the
soft magnesium. The timecert inserts work fantastic and don't pull out even on endurance 9000 rpm 2.0 liter Porsche race engines.

I would trust these inserts which are far superior to helicoils.

Canada1 CVHs in North America DO have cam wear issues, the journals rarely have problems but the lobes like to wear out on the flat-tappet cams. I believe it's the exhaust lobe for the 3rd cylinder that tends to wear out first and I don't know why.....

Maybe it's dependent on what cam and valve cover you have, my 1.6s seem to suffer lobe wear the hardest :/
