Hi all,

My clutch is hard to disengage, with the clutch cable end spaced out a bit from its mounting plate i can just about use it, but its biting point is about a cm off the floor.

So i guess i need to do the infamous pedal mod.... question is, what have i got fitted (pic below) it has the bolt to adjust pedal height, i didn't think the mk4 had this from the factory, so has a previous owner changed something already.




Also, specifically what parts do i need for the conversion, I've read up about a few people using the mk5 pedal with mk4 quadrant.... how would this increase travel?

Its fitted with an abs clutch cable does any one know if the non ABS is shorter?

looks like yours is already converted, just use that allen key to adjust the biting point

The bolt just moves the pedal up though mate, until it hits the steering shaft, it doesnt seem to help the biting point or at least not enough.

Hello Robert, how the things are?
cable for cars with ABS is 1294mm
cable fo cars without ABS is 1248mm
These are for RHD cars as yours, Mine is LHD and the non ABS clutch cable was arround 30-35cm sorter! massive difference

That is the pedal conversion assuming the a mk5/6 quadrant has been used as well (should be white and cut down by 10 teeth IIRC), cable should be a single piece one not the two piece one, the bolt should give the adjustment as mentioned.

Thanks for the cable lengths, maybe i have fitted the wrong cable (too long)....

Hiya mate, i'll take the pedal out at the weekend and have a look, i thought the adjuster bolt just adjusted pedal height and didn't have a big effect on actual clutch cable adjustment? I've adjusted it up a bit but the pedal now sits quite high and i still have a crap biting point at the bottom of travel, its annoying as the clutch is very springy at that point too so makes it very easy to be jurky and stall the car.... im fine driving it but it makes it a real pain in the arse getting some one else to drive smoothy as i 'attempt' to map the thing.

That bolt is the only thing that has any effect on your biting point now, the quadrant simply holds the end of the cable and the bolt pushes against it, so the higher the pedal the more travel you will have on the cable.

Hmmmm maybe its got a small quadrant fitted then, or my cables too long.....

Yeah could have a MK4 quadrant fitted which would do as you describe, cable length makes no difference as it only moves within it sheath (although there are two types).

True, i wondered if the sheath was the same length but the actual cable was shorter.... which might help me as the cable is very loose on the gearbox arm, quadrant first though

i`m thinking of using the mk2 (i think) transit cable, apparently its fully adjustable so can do away with the crappy ratchet alltogether. need to look in to it more though.

Hmmmn that could be interesting, i wonder how its adjusted? and what ends it uses.

where the clutch fork is on the box threaded end slots through with a plastic D shaped bush. two nuts on the end so adjust up and lock off.

was thinking hydro but an adjustable cable sounds like less bother and more reliable to me. like i say need to look in to it a bit more.

Nice, i was going to go hydraulic but can be bothered at the moment, i don't fancy drilling my bulkhead at the moment either as its nice and original, maybe if the engine comes out again though as it would be nice and easy then.

Could be?! IIRC I used to be able to unhook the gearbox end by hand so it was never particularly tight.
MK5/6 setup doesnt use the ratchet either, hence the adjuster bolt in the above pics.
