Both gauges have completely stopped working at exactly the same time, are the gauges naffed? I've checked earths plugs on the back of the dash fuses, at a loss now,

Do you mean take the plugs off the back of the clocks and then just check each one for a live reading with a multimeter whilst the ignition is on?

Yes thats if each gauge has a plug for it, if so yes check you have power with ignition on.
Does your rev counter work? Usually the dash has one plug as it's a PCB so if this being the case leave the plug in and visually inspect and check the tracks as these can break.

Still havent got this issue resolved ive checked all of the earths on the senders of the respective units the fuel gauge comes up extremely slowly and i mean just clears the red after being on for 15mins and the temp gauge doesnt move at all ive check the tracks they are all good ive also checked the plus and they are not broken i nipped up the connectors so they are tight as well. Any thing i can check does anyone know exactly whhich wires i need to be checking on the white plug?

There are no earths on the senders as that is the earth, the fact the fuel gauge moves shows it is getting power, remove wire on fuel sender and earth with ignition on, gauge should read full...?

The only way to remove the wires from the fuel sender is to drop the tank is it not?

Oh I thought you had as you said you checked, no you don't necessarily, if you can short the sender wire on the back of the gauge this will do the same thing, easiest one to do is try the temp sender under bonnet first as a test.

I have tried the temp gauge under the bonnet and it reads nothing on the gauge not a flicker I think it is a live problem to the gauge but how would I check that I need to know what each colour wire to te two plugs on the clocks do to determine which ones to check?

I presume there is just one plug that plugs into the PCB on the back? If so ideally you need to know the respective live(s) to check. Not knowing Escort I woulden't know, do you have a wiring diagram?
More than likely a live problem tbh as both gauges don't work the only reason i said check is because you said the fuel gauge moves indicating this is getting power from somewhere.
You will probably have a blue and a green wire, I can tell you it will not be these so thats 2 eliminated for you!
