Going to change the driveshaft oil; seals on the box soon. I still have ABS fitted, what would happen if I just don't put the belts back on (I hate ABS) would I just have normal brakes?

I'm going to replace the drive shaft oil seal at the weekend, so will have to remove the shafts and ABS belts. I'm not a big fan of the ABS anyway so just thought if poss I would leave the belts off but didn't want to end up with no brakes!!!

If you have to remove the driveshafts anyway then just remove the rest of the system as well- you only need to change the brake reservoir for a standard mk4 item and have a couple of pipes made up once its removed.
i found it improved the feel and effectiveness of the standard brakes a fair bit

you won't end up with no brakes - jsut the same as if a belt breaks you will still have braking - just not ABS. Your dash warning light will be constantly on however (same as if the microswitch plunger falls out as they are prone to).

There's a few topics ref this, so have a read and remove it properly if you don't want ABS anymore.

won't fail the mot if the light still follows sequence, you can only be advised of components which are missing, if you do remove the abs make sure you have the light rigged to still operare, as all series 2's came with abs as standard, when the car is registered for mot it tells the tester this in the vehicle specific info including the operation sequence of the warning lamp

but if the belts are removed then the plunger on the m/s won't be held down so will always be on...unless you get that sorted as well.

Can't do that as the m/s body sits inside a hole so wouldn't fit back in the housing. Only way would be to tie-wrap the wiring up out of the way.

Durka: either of the above. Look under the car and if you see something squarish dangling under the car then the m/s assembly has dropped out of the housing. They fit in from underneath so a bit of a flawed design. If it has, use a bit of silicon just to "glue" bond it in place. If they are both fitted then I would also say one of the belts has snapped.

yes the belt runs on the inner driveshaft joint so the height of the car has no issue
