Default I have been done like a kipper!

Been after an s2 turb for a long long time now and finally have got enough no claims to get one.
I looked around and went to stafford to go and buy one off a trader. The bloke assured me that it was mint condition underneath and judging by the outside I took his word for it... Like a fucking mug!
Electrics played up after the first day so I took it to my mates garage and we put it on the ramp. This is where the fun began as I was nearly in tears at what I had been sold.
inner outer sills both sides rusted through, floorpans both sides rusted through, rear gutter sills both sides rusted through... all covered by this shitty silicone stuff to hide it all very very well.
Further more the fuel pump was leaking and had been mounted under the tyre well so was about 3 inches from the ground.
I phone up the trader i got it off and told him I wanted my money back, my traded car or for all repairs to be paid for... He said that he would see what he will do and get back to me.. still no word and it has been 3 days. Ill call him in a bit and see what is going on.
The garage quoted me a grand to have the work done but I know a welder and we are going to sort it this weekend for 100 quid... great price I know but it aint the point. If I werent into my cars and someone else had bought it they could have had a severe problem when hitting a speed bump, fuel pump sparking on the ground and the thing going up in flames. I told the garage all this and said id rather put the car right and keep it rather than them bodging it up and selling it on to another unsuspecting customer.
I know I should have looked properly underneath but it was all siliconed and was hard enough to see on the ramp... this garages should be shut down or burnt down and Im going to report them to the trading standards as they sold me a car with an mot that wasnt road worthy.

Anyone else been sold a lemon?

i done a deal a while back for a h reg mercury grey escort turbo from glasgow i travelled down had a good look at it and outside it looked mint not a mark on it i had a quick check of the battery tray fuse box tray boot floor etc etc and i couldnt see nothing wrong so the deal was done and i drove it home.
a few weeks later i decide to whip out all the interior and waxoyl the floors and thats when you get a proper look at an escort floor lol it needed welding and to be fair the car had only ever been welded once before in the boot about half the size of a mars bar lol so i couldnt really complain.
tbh from now on if i went to have a look at an escort turbo i would spend a good while having a look underneath etc or try getting it on ramps to have a good look.
i have no regrets about getting my grey turbo but i regret selling it and il make a point of trying to get it back when its finished.

i also went to have a look at an escort turbo recently from a trader he was after 3500
all he went on about was how mint the recaro driver side seat was and yeah it looked good if it was the original lol the passenger side one was shagged on the right hand side bolster he had just changed them over.
i asked him how good the shell was he replied ive had hundreds of these cars this one is the best by far so i had a look in the boot it was mingin i had a look at the roof it was rusty as fuck it was in general a car worth 1500 quid i was laughing like fuck all the way home
i would never buy off a trader i didnt know

You seem to have done what i did.

I bought mine for half of that. Turned up 2 days ago as a non runner, the engine didnt even turn ver but it was very clean and rot free. but oh my god it looked like it shoud be goingto the scrap yard when i see it on the back of the truck.

Almost made me tear!

ive been in your situation, many years ago i bought a ford scorpio ultima diesel for 6500 quid when they where worth that, 2 days later it was using more water than i could ever put in it. went back to the trader who basically told me bollocks, it cost me over 1200 quid to get it done, had to have a new head as it had been bodged. an to make matters worse i didn't check the reg, when i come to sell it, it was a cat c write off as well so i lost loads on it. learned me a lesson though. on something like what you have bought you should have checked it over a lot better, but i know what its like, ya see something you want and ya have to have it, we've all done it i think at some point. hope ya get it sorted mate, good luck

It is gutting! I just dont understand some sellers, A buyer IS going to find the problems if there are any so why not be honest.

Almost every seller i have had turn up has sad "This is better than i exspected!".... Well that is sort of my sales plan there!

I bought an rst weekend before last... same, always wanted one. Mint on the out side but haven't looked under it yet ......

Gay chavtastic wheels seats lights and steering wheel but all fixed now.

On the way home i stalled it, wouldn't start again.

Starter - buggered
battery - buggered
Fueling all wrong.

And to be fair i saw the car twice and both times i saw it the engine was slightly warm, obviously well timed to run properly.

It will be fixed because i like them and wanted a project for the company i have just started, so didn't really care what i bought. But you've just got to be careful with these people.

All the best. My advise would be to sell it for what you can get and look for a better one.

I bought rst from Germany 2 years ago, without seeing it. My decision was based in pictures what i saw about car. Car was advertised that has been off the road and dry garaged last 10 years and now oversprayed and "serviced"
3 owners from new and just passed mot. All original extas and radiant red color.
Car was always been in Köln area germany. There was 118.000km (73.000miles) in the clock
So.. what i got:
Chassis was pretty good yep and there was no much rust, (battery tray, rear floorpan mars bar size rot. I got those replaced by local welder. Okay chassis was fine BUT:
Engine leaked badly oil & coolant, camshaft was worn. It started only 3 cyl but in moment all 4 running and brakes were bad. Brake booster was broken.
Some other things:
-Boost enrichement wont work
-Windshield scraped
-Front wheel bearings were broken
-All bushes were broken
-Shocks were worn
-Sunroof was sticky
-Aerial dont work
-Battery was pretty dead
-Front lights has rot in bottom
-Alloys were more like egg than round / tyres in bad condition because of garaging.
-Interior smelled like ashtray ( i have to wash every plastic piece and get interior professionally cleaned)

So after all what can i say.. what was good?
Chassis was pretty good and interior too after hard cleaning. All electrics work.
I have all original keys and papers (service book etc). Parcel shelf was ok without any nasty holes.

Chassis after steam cleaning:

After spending near 5000Ł for rebuilding i can say it is now pretty mind condition. It is not ready, next spring it will get set of new ambers and lights and some other original thins as Ford badge for rear if i will find original one. I have 90 rear spec spoiler too in garage.

In conclusion i would say yes it was lemon. But car is 20 years old now and i believe there has not been much love with this car in previous owners. After all, if i had second change had bought some properly restored from Britain and converted it LHD. I say i would not buy any old car anymore before i have been saw it and drive it myself. More better if i see some restoration pictures and i know what it had been done. Currently i am seeking Mint pug 205 GTI 1.9 100% original and well looked. But those again are really old cars and its pretty hard to be sure about condition. My RST future will be most likely dry garaging in stands 10 months @ year under protective blanket and drive only nice sunny days. Here in Finland there is no such many rs turbos any more.

Go to yhe office of FAIR TRADING. If the car is not as described they are always keen to take on crap traders. Whoever issued the last MOT could and should also be in trouble..

in all honesty u will never get a mint one of these without losing 4-5k and even then i would spend a good hour or 2 looking over it
but i mean they are good cars but i have never had one that aint in someway faulted

i bought one a cab turbo and from the looks of it it werent the best but i parted with a k and the head blew the timing belt was off by a few notched the drivers side had an xr3 disk and the passenger was an rs turbo disk
put was cable tied on
as well as a hand full of cleverly hiddwen problems i dnt see why people bodge these cars so badly
