Question Please Help - S2 RS Turbo, Starts Then Cuts Out... BUT...

Hi everyone, i would really appreciate it if anyone could help me, i know im not a regular poster here, but im always reading your advice, I have read through the forum, and alot of people seem to be having a similar problem, the only thing is alot of the time they dont post follow ups to let us know how they got it sorted, so i promise to do at least that! anyway...

Iv been restoring my escort for about 6 months now.. and its ready to go for its MOT, so, after an oil change, i went to fire her up, and bam.. she was running for the first time in a month.. didnt seem to be any problems, but then it cut out after a couple of mins, and wont start back up unless i leave it for 10 mins, or if i take the air filer off and push down the flap in there, it will fire up, and keep running as long as i rev the engine and push the flap at the same time..
I have checked all of the boost hoses for leaks and they seem fine, the only thing i have noted is a slight hissing noise coming from behind the inlet manifold, is that normal? All the vacum tubes seem ok also.. oil cap has a good seal etc..

Please any ideas will be great, i feel dis heartened after spending so many hours getting her looking good.. Thanks, J

The hissing noise could possibly be some king of air leak, you normally get some king of air rushing sound around by the throttle body as the air is pulled though the small paths in the idle circuit. IT could all so be the the fuel/air ratio (mixture) is set up wrong,
you say you been restoring you car, have you changed any engine parts, like fitting an uprated breather system..... as this can have quite effect on the base idle...

It sounds as that is starts from cold OK but as it worm's up and comes off cold start the engine then cuts out, i would say the most possible cause is air leaking in somewhere

let me know
Cheers

Default Forgot to mention...

I forgot to mention that it has never run perfect, before i started working on her, it used to overboost, it would start boosting and then get to a certain point then either cut out, or just splutter, but sometimes if i accellerated slowly it would boost alot better, I am wondering if that AMAL valve if plugged up correctly, as i was hanging off when i first bought it, is there somewhere i can find a diagram of how it plugs in?..

Tonight i am going to take the inlet manifold off and see what is making that hissing noise.. I had a look behind it yesterday when it was running for a couple of mins, and it seems to be coming from that large black plastic pipe in the middle behind the inlet manifold, .. i tightened the jubilee clip up as much as possible but its still the same, i think im better off removing the inlet and having a proper look,
Thanks for the replies so far, il let you know how i get on.. By the way if anyone else still has any ideas please let me know..

Also.. in this thread... https://passionford.com/forum/general-car-related-discussion/144435-using-easy-start-to-start-an-rs-turbo.html they talk about a black relay on the fuse box...
"vroooom_ptssssh" Said... "Mine was the same, wouldnt start from cold without metering flap! but I found somehow i'd blown a fuse within a relay under the dash, Think it's located next to the fuel pump relay. . its something to do with the fuel ECU not fueling on cold start or on boost. "
.. Theres a black relay in my fuse box that looks a bit burned, also the pink fuel relay looks a bit burned inside.. i have cleaned them up, and resoildered them.. because it was sunday, and couldnt get replacement ones, but i dont know if they would affect anything becasue i can hear the fuel pump prime when i turn the key.. i dont know, just thought i would mention it to help build a better picture.. thanks again by the way..

Unhappy

OK.. I spent the day removing every type of hose on the car, checking them and cleaning them, i think iv sorted the hissing noise, coming from the black tube in the middle behind the inlet manifold, i think its the auxilery?? and found a small gash in the end of the boost hose that goes from the bottom of the turbo to the intercooler, i cut the pipe down a bit and put everything back together, it started but still kept cutting out, and im 100% that the pipers are all good, iv checked them thoroughly. any suggestions? thanks

I had this on mine for months.... blagged the cr*p out of me! Turns out it was the dump valve. If you have a valve fitted, try kinking (finger/thumb) the vacumn hose that comes out the top it. You may find that thats your issue too.

If the car continues to idle, just remove the vacumn hose from the valve and bung it with something - then replace your DV.

Try it

the escort turbo runs a closed loop intake and breather system. any air leaks in any part of this system will make the engine run rough or not at all.

Mine did this not that long ago, it took me a while to find out it was yellow sensor under the inlet just below the cold start, its a coolant sensor and cost me Ł17, once i fitted it the car ran perfect
