Evening all.
Got a Pro Alloy I/C (with the oil cooler) fitted today, and the car seems to be running very hot/warm.

I've read a few posts that this is normal ... but just wanted to make sure.

The temperature goes up pretty quick, not instant, but quicker than before I had the cooler put on. When moving it seems the temp does drop but not that far below 1/2 way, and sitting still (not in traffic) it sits around half way with the fans running but if sitting in traffic it slowly goes up ... I've not seen it hit the red yet, thats why I'm posting this.

What can I do to increase the cool air reaching the rad ?
It's a standard rad which did have a pin hole in it a few months ago but was repaired. Most of the posts I've seen say to get a 82degree thermostat and a manual fan switch ... anyone know where I could get these from ? and how easy is it to wire up/setup ?

That's all I can remember about it atm.

Just seen on FiestaTurbo, a few people have fitted a "revotec electronic fan controller" might look into one of those and a 82degrees thermostat

82 degree stats are on eBay frequently, im sure places like Burton power sell them aswell (it may well be a cossie thermostat i cant remember though)

As for fan switch, thats a simple mod you can do yourself

the temp guage is for water so your not able to monitor any difference in the oil temp

also youve now restriced air flow to the radiator.............

i have the same on my car, personally i wouldnt worry as long as the fans always kick in when the temps go up and as long as you aint going in the red. I also have the pro alloy cooler with the water cooler added!!! the switchable fan option is the best, have you got the fans mounted behind the intercooler (on the rad) or infront of the intercooler cooler??? the fans behind the intercooler (on the rad) is the best way for cooling

have you got the deflector plate or turbo cooler fitted? if youve got the deflector plate (where the turbo cooler goes) then i'd take it off to allow more air to the Rad in the summer!

safechav - burtonpower do them for Ł7 so might get it from them. is the switch just a switch that sits on the wiring for the fan ?

chris - i've got a oil temp gauge i must get round to fitting ... i suppose that would be the wise option

gambit - they're mounted in front of the i/c, did think of moving them to behind it but wouldn't they be blowing air out of the front of the car in that position ? the gauge hasnt gone into the red, just worried that it might.

vroooom ptssssh - pretty sure i dont have the plate on, can see why that would restrict it more.


what about the revotec electronic fan controller ? anyone used it before ?

You need to run 1 wire from the fan plug to the car, which goes on a switch, so you can dash mount, very simple

Would it be the cheaper option to do that rather than a electronic fan controller ?

Dont suppose theres a quick guide on it ?

Well, the fan override method, at most expensive has to be about Ł3-4 (and that gets you a NICEEE switch )

How much is the fan controller i wonder

Its so simple aswell it can't ever let you down.

why not just bridge the fan relay so they run constantly??

the later pro alloy coolers are slightly different to allow the fans to be mounted behind the intercooler as i have on my car. Its the pro alloy second genration front mount intercooler. Thats why you are having problems coz logically the fans being behind the intercooler are better. Your water temps are high so the fans blowing directly onto the rad will be cooling a heck of alot better than it is now. You dont really need fans infront of the intercooler as it should get sufficient air from the atmoshphere whilst driving.

you can also use a fan sender from a Saph Cossie as these kick in at a lower temp that the standard Escort turbo sender

i fitted a cosworth fan switch and the fan cut in then never went off again.

in the end i went for a standard turbo fan switch and ts been spot on.

i am gonna try the cosworth fan switch again but with an 82deg thermostat to see if that works.

i have an 82 degree thermostat,Cossie fan switch and twin kenlowe fans and i have no cooling problems at all

ive noticed people saying you can fasten the fans the other way round on the pro alloy second gen intercoolor, so does this mean you fasten them to the back of the intercooler or the front of the rad? or can you have one fastened to the front of the intercooler and one on the front of the rad? im confused!

In theory the loom shouldn't burn out, the fan may of been getting tired and pulling more than it should of.

Even so u would never want them running all the time, wastes petrol and rapes the alternator aswell, nice to be able to have it switchable.

I dont know where you got this idea from mate????????The fans should be blowing air thru the rad.Maybe thats why you've got temp prob's,have you checked the fan is running the correct way????Regards Micky

the fans should either both be mounted on the rad and blowing in to it ( air into the engine bay) or both on the intercooler blowing through the intercooler onto the rad. if you wire the fans the wrong way round they will suck instead of blowing and this is to no advantage at all. simply the intercooler with the fans behind the intercooler (mounted directly to rad) are much better and thats why the later coolers all use this method. your standard intercooler dont have a fan so you dont need one on your new one, but your rad has a standard fan so you still need one when you fit an intercooler. They change them as the standard fan is very chunky and does not allow most intercoolers to fit over it.

the fans are mounted on the i/c blowing air towards the rad, i did think what was the point of doing it that way.

i dont think the fans will fit between the rad and i/c, if they do then i'd mount them on the rad which would make more sense.


just seen on the pro-alloy website this uprated fan kit


might have to check my funds and possibly get the rad and fan kit :P

MODDER J: that rad is cool, and its a better way of mounting the fans. i got a standard rad which is fine but if that ever goes i will get one of those.

It sounds like you have just bought one of our generation 1 coolers..The fans are fixed to the front of the intercooler blowing back over the radiator.
Unfortunatley you can not use the uprated fan kit with this one (it simply will not fit).
You should check the direction of the fans ,if they are wired backwards they will suck instead of blow.

Pretty sure the fans are blowing the right way, but when sitting in traffic its not enough to keep it all cool
I didn't know there was more than 1 gen of the i/c till I posted this topic ... DOH !
Not sure if its worth taking the current one off, and getting a 2nd gen i/c, more money to spend

Had a look at mounting the fans on the rad, and it wont work, not enough space.

Do the fans on the gen2 i/c go onto the existing rad ?

yes the fans sit on the radiator with the second generation cooler..
however yours should still be ok.. i guess you havbe checked all the usual points? (rad flushed, fan switch operating properly correct pressure cap etc etc.?)

I've not checked them points, but I'm pretty sure they're all ok ... doesnt harm in checking I suppose

Would the Gen2 cooler offer better rad cooling ? As I have a plan to get one if its worth having.

yes indeed it will because its a better design and fans will fit onto standard rad. As previously said you should check everything is sweet before spending a wod again. Its a shame that you might be buying yet another cooler. You can also add a turbo cooler to the second gen cooler which is like an extra mini radiator for further cooling. I have one on mine but dont know how much difference it makes. But what i do know is that it works when you touch it when the car has just come to a stand still the turbo coller is only warm but after standing for a while it gets very hot so obviously whilst driving the water is being cooled.

PRO ALLOY: i want a alloy rad for my series 2 are the fans the same spal ones that came with my second gen intercooler that you show attached to the alloy rad. i want the rad with the fan fitting bracket but will it be cheaper without the fans???
