Default ERST problems ?????HELP??????

One of the lasses in the FordSport club has a cabby with an ERST conversion. Now the car is in need of a lot of TLC.

Me and a mate have spent a day sorting air leaks and retarding the dizzy as somebody had swung it to max advance .

It's 1000 times better than it was this morning but it won't restart once hot and is fouling plugs at an alarming rate.

Any hints or suggestions would be really nice (and not the gallon of super and a match ones)

Either ignition timing is still out, or it's overfueling like a boot i reckon.

set it up std, 7-8psi, 12degree's tdc (11 degrees vaccum blocked) (or vice versa) oh and set the fueling i dunno what that's set to std tho

Disconnect the cold start injector. Does the metering flap pulse when it's hot and ur trying to start it? When does it foul the plugs? If it's fouling the plugs, it's obv rich. If some has wound the timing up, then they could have also wound up the fuel pressure to supress det from this large advance. If all sensors and wiring seems fine, give the fuel pressure actuator a 1/4 turn anti clockwise to see if it improves things.

As Rob said 2 posts up there was a wiring fault. Unfortunately the explanation I got from the lass didn't make much (any) sense. Rob knows the score in relation to this however and I'm sure he'll sort her out.

Just wanted to help a fellow club member out as she's had a lot of mates that "know loads" tinkering.

Cold start has been disconnected and the metering head flap doesn't seem to noticably pulse. Plugs foul all the time within 10 minutes of cleaning them up they are black and sooty again. Especially when trying to restart

There's ur start problem - it's prob got an air leak. To check, press it down very slightly when it next won't start, and see if she coughs/starts.

If it's fouling, its far too rich. Check temp sensors and fuel pressure.

Tried depressing the metering head flap and it does help a little. After finding a couple of air leaks I removed the whole vacum/breather system and reinstalled it from scratch ensuring we had no rogue pipes or leakages.

Only disconnected the cold start to see if this may be a cause/part cause to the prob.

The wiring fault Rob mentioned has to be sorted before we can progress further but that's a little beyond me

Steve - what is the fault related to?

It's obv a transplant, so i can see a major botch on the cards.

Vacume pipe around the back of the inlet gives problems with leaks.

If the engines worn, it won't like hot starts. Again, maybe a reason why the fuel pressure may have been increased. The ex gf's car had really worn bores, and that was a bastard to start. They just dont create enough vacume.

Rick.

the pipe round the back of the inlet, WHY is it plastic? can you change it to rubber? or wrap plummers tape around it to seal it?

The plastic pipe from the breather filter to the metering head had more leaks than a dodgy Escort battery tray. I know these can be problamatic which was why we stripped and reassembled it checking as we went.

Think it needs to go in now
