Help.. My Car wont start?
Hi, I'm a new member please help!!!
I have a Mondeo 2004 TDCi. It has started 1st time every time since I've had it approx 6 months... including 4 times yesterday. This morning and agian this afternoon however it is failing to start. The Imobiliser light comes on for approx 3 seconds before going out when I turn the ignition on. When I try to start the engine nothing happens at all, no noise from the starter motor or anything. I can hear some faint buzzing noises when the ignition is turned on/off. When I parked up last night I switched the engine off whilst I was slowing to a stop, only 10 feet or so before halting.(paniced as all my Sisters and Brothers cars were at the house and my Dad is unwell, thought something may have happened). Thanks for any help.

Not sure on the 2004 models but try putting the key in the door, turn it to lock, then unlock again. Try that. This should or does on the older models turn the imobiliser off.
Failing that check your fuses.
After that I would be looking at getting it on a diagnostics machine and seeing what that throws up

Thanks for the replies, I will post on the other board as well. It's a strange one, not sure weather to try jump leads or a jump start?
....Thinking back, last night I got some stuff out of the boot of my car. I used the button on the key to unlock just the boot. I closed the boot without pressing the button to lock the car, not sure if this could be the cause of a imobiliser problem?

Try the lock method first. If its not that then its deffo diagnostics time.

It may be something very simple.
The fact the PATS light comes on and then goes off suggests that the key is being recognised, if it wasn't, the light would flash rapidly.
Check to see if you are getting power down to the solenoid on the starter motor. If so, good chance it's a starter motor fault so give it a bash and see what happens.
If there's no power, it may be a wiring or relay issue in which case it'll need investigation. Try powering up the solenoid manually with the ignition on and see if it starts. Make sure it's not in gear though!!
The rule is try to not overlook the basics, all too often I get called out to cars people think there is something major wrong with their car when it turns out it's actually a flat battery.

Ok, I've tried both keys in the lock no luck. I've tried jump leads from my friends truck. I've rang OMC Ford who said the keys and chip appear to be fine by the Red LED working as it should. I've checked all fuses and relays in the fuse box under the bonet. The fella I spoke to at Ford said it sounds like a starter motor problem, as I described how nothing happens at all when I try to turn the engine over. I'm gonna wait for my Brother to get home and try a jump start and I'm gonna book it in at a local garage tomorrow. I'm not spending any big bucks on this as soon as its running I'm trading it in for something better, Ford Ranger maybe?

Thanks for the advice but beyond checking fuses I'm pretty much useless when it comes to working on cars. I only got the Mondeo as a run about as it had FSH and low mileage for its age. That and I never had a problem with my Escort RS Turbo or RS2000 when I was a young boy racer (they were the days).
Well it's working again now! Not sure what fixed it? My brother arrived so I got the tow rope out to try bumping it and to take it to the garage if it failed to start. I emptied the boot to find the towing eye, inserted the towing eye on the front of the car and attached it to my Brothers van. I got it put the ignition on, put the drivers window down and sounded the horn to signal to my brother we were ready to go. Before he set off I decided to give it another try and it sparked into life! I sounded the horn again to tell my brother to stop?I think it's time to get a new car... I fancy a Ford Ranger, plenty of room for all my gear and I could have a little off road fun.
Kind of, I need it to be reliable as I work shifts and need the car to get me to and from work early mornings and late nights. It not starting this morning cost me Ł20 in a Taxi to get to work and by the time the Taxi arrived I was late. I also had to get the bus home which took an hour when my normal drive takes 15 mins. If I had a work van and only used the car for personal use (like my last job) it wouldnt really be an issue.... I just hope it starts in the morning!
What happens on these is the dual mass flywheel starts to wear and metal shavings clog the starter motor up until it wont turn any more. I bet this is happening. I'd suggest whipping the starter out and seeing if it is clogged up with crap.
This sounds like the problem, when I try to fire the engine nothing at all happens, the starter motor doesnt even click. With jump leads it made no difference. It started at tea time but I tried it again at 2000 and the problem was back. This time I bump started it on a hill in 3rd gear and it started up. I then drove up and down the street for 5 minutes and it runs fine. I turn it off and it will start again no problem until I let it cool down then it returns to the original problem.... I'm gonna have to take it to the garage tomorrow as I wouldnt even know where to start looking for the starter motor, never mind have the ability to whipp it out! I wish I would have done some sort of mechanical work back in my colledge days.

If you are not gentle with the clutch then you throw the dice and if your number comes up expect the above!
