....Thinking back, last night I got some stuff out of the boot of my car. I used the button on the key to unlock just the boot. I closed the boot without pressing the button to lock the car, not sure if this could be the cause of a imobiliser problem?
That wont cause your issue - you can enter the boot with the fob without affecting the immobiliser.
Try the lock method first. If its not that then its deffo diagnostics time.
