Default Refund on the horizon.....or not??

I own a Mk5 Golf GT 170bhp 2.0 Diesel and have just received a recall letter through from VW. The part(s) that they have concern about and want to check over are the injectors, the fault reported being "Small electrically conducting carbon deposits can settle on the Piezo pump injector elements after being carried in the engine oil. This can lead to running problems and in some cases to a short circuit of the Piezo pump injector element, which can cause engine running problems and in certain circumstances the engine to stop running."
Now obviously I'm going to have my car checked over (booked in for Friday) but the thing is, my car broke down with this very fault back in the summer last year! The repair bill I received was in the region of £500 as the injectors in the 170bhp version like mine are a bit've a one off so therefore cost a fortune to replace I had it repaired professionally and have the receipt to prove I had the work done (I've even still got the receipt I was given by the recovery guy who brought me home after I broke down aswell!) so where do you think I stand with regards getting a refund for this repair work from VW??-with sending these recall letters out they've openly admitted that THEIR part was at fault, so why should I have to foot the bill for it?!

If yours has broke down and had to be repaired before they decided to recall, and you have a reciept for proof of work and what exactly failed, then i dont think they have a leg to stand on, they've admitted its a fault, and if yours had this fault when it went in they'd replace it all so they should foot the bill imo.

Thanks for your reply bud, that's exactly what I'm thinking aswell! They would've had to pay for it had they discovered any issues when it's in for the recall work anyway, so they should pay for the work that I've already had done aswell as it was the EXACT problem they're recalling my car for in the first place!

The recall is an admission of a fault or defect within the vehicle by the manufacturer so they've signed their own admission of guilt. Should defo be able to reclaim it mate.

Liking the sound of this lads I'll ask at my local VW dealer when I take my car in on Friday see what they say, probably be a matter I'll have to take up with VW UK though will it I imagine as opposed to the dealer themselves sorting it out??

I believe it is mate yeah 'cos the 170 versions have different injectors to the 140hp models. Plus my mate's got a 140 and he hasn't had a recall letter through..

Dont want to piss on your bonfire but did you get the repairs done at Vw when your car broke down last summer? If not did they use genuine Vw parts?

If not they might find a loophole they can squeeze through to get out of a refund, just a thought.

Repair itself wasn't done at VW no (due to the stupidly high labour costs they charge!!) but genuine VW parts were used in repairing it!

Im no expert but so long as it was done using genuine Vw parts at a VAT registered garage then im confident you will be ok, good luck with it all and let us know how you get on

I wasnt trying to be an arse I was just trying to cover all bases because I up until December last year I worked for a Ford main dealer and they used all sorts of excuses to get away with things

No, I'd only owned the car since March so was unaware they were offering to replace them FOC As you can imagine, with the labour rates main dealers charge there wasn't a cat in hells chance I was taking it there to get repaired!!

Well I took my car in to Harrogate VW yesterday to have the recall work carried out, while I was there I raised the issue of me having to fork out over £500 a few months ago to have a faulty injector replaced! It seems to me as though I am in for a refund Had the receipt with me for the previous work I'd had done on the car so they took a photocopy of that and said they'd forward it on to VW UK, and I should receive a cheque within the next couple of weeks! Still don't want to get my hopes up just incase, but it sounded very promising as they were just talking as though I would be getting it and not once did they say anything even remotely negative like I "might" get it or anything like that so fingers crossed!!! Will let you know if/when I get the cheque through...

So when the dealer sends you an email questionaire how is your repsonse going to be ?

and has this changed your opinion of the dealers now? most dealers in the vw segment are very reasonable to deal with, as long as your comparing apples to apples the service compared to a..nother garage is mostly superior

When I had the BMW I always took it to the main dealer and found them to be very good. They know the cars and faults and sort them out under the warranty no fuss.

People I work with thought I was mad taking it there but I had a very good service and paid a negligible amount more for servicing etc and they dropped me off at work and then dropped the car off when it was done as I booked in at short notice and there wasn't a courtesy car. Plus they do great coffee! Find service like that for the £40 pound less independent! They will price match on things like tyres and brakes and you KNOW you are getting the genuine parts.

Plus when I traded it I got a mint trade in as it had a full BMW service history. In two years and 40 thousand miles I only lost 2k in depreciation. Pretty good I think.

Main dealers aren't bad at all IMO. Whilst I was there once a bloke with a 2yr old car had been paying an independent to sort out a high fuel use issue and had coughed up £300 in parts and labour and it wasn't sorted. Sorted in the morning at the main dealer free under the warranty!

I found the BMW main dealer by me very good when I used them years ago, lift home etc, pretty transparent with the bill and so on but as the car got older it wasn't worth spending that much on it plus there's a superb independent in Swansea as well (not the one behind the BMW garage).

Vw service are pretty impressive,I used to buy a lot of engine oil there years ago as it was cheaper than in the motor factors and top notch stuff.

Glad they sorted it mate, well done.
