Fiesta boot won't open.
I have a MK IV 1997 Fiesta 1.25 Ghia
The boot in my Fiesta won't open from the outside with the key, I don't think it's the lock its self that's broken as the key turns but won't turn with the wrong key I think whatever is broken, is the bit between the lock and the latch, anybody know what this is called and is it a job I can do myself?
Also one of the electrical contacts to the boot on the car has burned out and one of the pins on the boot side is shorter than the rest and so the heated rear screen doesn't work, (the automatic boot open switch has never worked as long as I've had it) I have seen both parts for sale and again I was wondering if these are fairly straight forward to replace myself?
I have had a lot of work done to the car recently and I'm about to replace the Cambelt as well as making up for the neglect I have given it for the last 3 years.

the lock won't open because the lock is fubar
you can get a replacement lock from ford for about Ł40 with a new tumbler and all new bits an bobs to make it fit
it is a bit fiddly to build the lock but it's fairly straight forward, just make sure you use the correct grease to grease it up
as for the solinoid not working, test it with a live feed first before you buy a new one
the contact panel may just be corroded so remove both bits, again, a little tricky, and then clean up all the contacts with either switch cleaner or some scotch pad from the kitchen
i've done the rebuild so i'll see if i can find some pics for you

The contact panel I'm pretty sure is knackered, not only is the third connector on the car corroded, but also recessed, I will get some pictures.
Are you sure it's the lock if the real key still turns it and one from another car doesn't?

if it turns but doens't open, spray loads of wd40 type stuff into the hole and see if this helps open the boot
otherwise you will have to get inside the car and break the panel to get to what you need to get to, it's only one little pin
apparently the pin panels for the electrics are the same for all the cars from that era so anyone from a scrappy will work

you need a screwdriver to prise them out, and some cutters to cut the wires from the donor
then you can get them undone at your leisure and fit them as and when
as for the panel though, you may just need to pop it from the top first as there is only one screw in it at the bottom (from memory) where they may be a pull handle located
the mk4's and mk4.5's are all basicly the same

Thanks, I will try it tomorrow, the local scrap yard's got one for a fiver, So it's just clipped in, how are the wires attached to it?
The lock seems to move slightly but doesn't do anything, I think it might need replacing, but it looks tricky.

If you take some tin snips with you you can cut out the rear panel inside and remove e erything very easily, but if he won't let you do that take a long screwdriver, a hammer and a selection of tors bits for the lock. It all dismanltes fairly easily but there is a locking ring on the lock inside that you have knock around to undo. It might also be worth taking some pliers and cutters along with you as there will be a double cable for the key/solinoid that will be clipped into place and there are a few little nuts and bolts which may need to be removed also
It's easy enough, but if you spend Ł40 at ford for the new lock assembly at least you'll be able to make up your keybfor it. Have you tried spraying some lube down the keyhole to see if it sorts it out?
Right so I bought the new parts from the Scrappy for a tenner, I tried to take the old plate off the car but it's welded it's self to the clip that it connects to, I'm hoping I can remove the clip without ruining it, but it was getting dark so I thought I'd leave it for now. It's the one second from the right that's melted BTW, I noticed the one on the far right (driver's side) isn't connected to anything, should this be connected to something (could this be for the auto boot opener?).
When removing the inner panel I noticed there's a lot of rot down there so I sprayed it with a good helping of Tetraseal, I hope this won't get worse now?

one is for the wiper
one is for the hot screen and one is for the earth return so the 4th one will be for the boot popper
it's been a few months since i did it so i can't recall properly
here are theonly pics i can find of the lock

I can't see any thing to go into the forth slot, the Boot poper seems to be conncected to electrics that connect to the car at the top of the boot, why all the electrics couldn't go in there I don't know? I did get the screen working, bit of a botch job though.
Where's the relay fuse box I might check the fuse for it.
