Default Please help! Fiesta 1.4 TDCi Engine/transmission light flashing

Hi, I have a problem with my Fiesta which is very frustrating and hard to trace. Its an '07 reg 1.4 TDCi, 60k miles. The engine/transmission light came on flashing a few months ago and has been doing so randomly ever since. Its not the management light, its the one which looks like a gear with an exclamation mark inside it. There doent seem to be any pattern to when it comes on or goes off.

A mate who works at a Ford dealer has had a look over it and done the self test thing on the dash, no error codes stored. He works on commercials so he isnt too familiar with the Fiesta. It was also black smoking so he suggested changing the EGR valve.

We did this, along with fitting a new fuel filter, which has now sorted the smoking. But the light is still coming on randomly just as before, so Im a bit stumped now. When the light is flashing the engine seems to not be boosting, as if its going into 'safe' mode. It seems like its possibly a sensor problem but how do I find out which one? It also smells of fumes sometimes, but we dont think the injector seals are leaking. Could it be part of the same problem?

Please help, its driving me crazy not knowing whats up or how to fix it!

take your airbox off and see check the wires near the injector harness there rub though on the head, yes your seal will be leaking, and there a relay under n/s headlight for cold start on some fiesta's tdci some have not there cause ton of shit like your probs

take it to ford and ask for a recal on the pcm, cause that your software error light

Did you ever have the fault codes read? And what were they?

oldford, yes my mate has done the self test thing which brings up the error codes on the dash, it says 'no dtc'.

I will have a look into what djcossie has suggested, but im away at the monther-in-laws til monday so cant do much til then.

How do I go about getting a PCM update? Just ask at local dealer? And is there a cost involved?

Have the codes read by a dealer or independent with a scanner that supports this car.
PCM update will not work if the Transmission has it's own ecu (TCM). It will work if it's one combined ecu with combined software for engine and transmission. Not when it's one box with two ecu's inside.
But why update? A few months ago everything was fine. So, I doubt that an update will cure it.
What I don't understand is that you keep driving the car for months with an obvious problem. You could do a lot of damage that way - read repairs costs a lot more money.

Ive been trying to get it diagnosed and fixed since it started, but I still need to get to work etc. Its hard to find any info on what could be causing it, and I cant afford to keep throwing cash at it. I dont mind spending the money required to sort it out, but dont want to spend a fortune trying to find out what it might be.

So Ive tried on fiestaownersclub.com, now Im trying on here too.

take it to the dealer we charge £50 for it, but ask for goodwill cause your car being an 07 and 60k on it. the £50 quid is for a master tech to spend 1 hour on your with ids.

your light is not for tcm like oldford says thats a diff light for cars with auto boxs.

i had fixed a car with the same probs, the car was watching 2 codes for the egr
the watching code dont show on the dash only hard codes do
so i changed the egr after fitting the egr took it for a spin and the light came on which is on yours, that light was kicking off for the glow plug relay saying that there was a error in calration i fone ford they wear like errrrrrrrrr. so i clone the pcm of than other fiesta light went and did not come back then ford done a tsb 2 weeks later saying about the glow plug relay fiestas have coms error when the pcm is self learning brings that light on and telling us to update the pcm with there new software

sorry this is so long

Whether or not the burning light is for the engine, the particle filter of the gearbox is not interesting for the discussion. The fact that people keep driving with the light on is. It seems to be some form of allergy for dealers.

I have a couple of those customers too, driving cars that cost new over 150K euro's. We are too expensive they say. So they take it everywhere, where it is cheaper. Of course at some time the engine light goes on and they still keep driving on. Eventually the car becomes undriveable and after spending a lot of money at cheap repair shops, the car comes to us. At that moment the cat's are destroyed, oxygen sensors melted, etc. etc, which could have been avoided. The extra costs are 1400 euro per cat (2 needed), 250 euro per Oxygen sensor (2 or 4 needed) plus labour. Usually the cause is a failing maf-sensor. And once again, we have produced a bill that runs in the thousands, keeping alive the fairy tale we are (too) expensive.

Have you got any idea of the costs of diagnostic equipment?
Of course you should pay something for a service.
I'll read it for free for customers who make the appointment right away, otherwise I charge for it, and no refund 6 months later.
Read my story? Still maintain you can get it fixed cheaper elsewhere?

Ive had a look and cant see anything near the n/s headlight, is it directly under, behind bumper? Nothing obvious on chassis rail area.

It seems I should get Ford on the case and get the fault codes read.

I will see about booking it in this week. Is it worth getting a pcm update too?

Ive got it booked in at my local Ford dealer for next thursday, at a cost of £75+VAT. I asked about a 'good will' reduction and was told they would have to do the diagnostic first, then depending on what it brings up they might be able to apply to Ford for a reduction.

So they want me to pay £88 before I can find out if I may get a bit of money back. And people wonder why dealers have a bad reputation? That doesnt sound like 'good will' to me.

And the light has not been on for 8 days now, is it worth it? I didnt dare ask about a PCM update, Ive already got one mortgage, cant afford 2!

Hi, I basically have the same problem with my car the same light randomly flashes up for about 30 seconds I had my fuel filter changed but the light came on again today. Just wondering did u get to the bottom of what the problem was and if so would you be able to tell me what it was. I no your post is a few years old lol but it's the only thing I've found on the internet matching what's happening to my car.
