Default Please help! Fiesta 1.4 TDCi Engine/transmission light flashing

Hi, I have a problem with my Fiesta which is very frustrating and hard to trace. Its an '07 reg 1.4 TDCi, 60k miles. The engine/transmission light came on flashing a few months ago and has been doing so randomly ever since. Its not the management light, its the one which looks like a gear with an exclamation mark inside it. There doent seem to be any pattern to when it comes on or goes off.

A mate who works at a Ford dealer has had a look over it and done the self test thing on the dash, no error codes stored. He works on commercials so he isnt too familiar with the Fiesta. It was also black smoking so he suggested changing the EGR valve.

We did this, along with fitting a new fuel filter, which has now sorted the smoking. But the light is still coming on randomly just as before, so Im a bit stumped now. When the light is flashing the engine seems to not be boosting, as if its going into 'safe' mode. It seems like its possibly a sensor problem but how do I find out which one? It also smells of fumes sometimes, but we dont think the injector seals are leaking. Could it be part of the same problem?

Please help, its driving me crazy not knowing whats up or how to fix it!
