Suggestions on where to visit in the USA please
Hi all,
my girlfriend and I are looking to go over to America during the summer for about 3 weeks. We're planning on travelling around a fair bit, and staying in each locations for about 3-4 days. At the moment we're not sure where to go. She's been to NYC before, and I'm not too fussed about going there this year.
So...can anyone suggest some good places to visit? We're pretty keen on finishing our trip at Las Vegas and then flying home, so thats one definite location. We're also considering California, San Fran, Chicago and Washington.
Where have people on here visited, and where would/woundn't you recommend we go?
Cheers,
Agar

mission beach california ive been to california alot as my dad lives there and i can honestly say its one of the nicest places ive been there a big hotel at the entrance of the island or plenty of holiday houses right on the beach
the beach itself is light sand with along skate/cycle path theres a place called the wave house thats awesome with a bar/resturant and 2 surf machines fun to watch if your not that way inclined at night they have live music ect
its also home to the best breakfast on the beach
theres also a salt water bay with a sand beach so if you fancy a swim with out fighting the wave its great theres also jet skiing there
everything on the island is walking distance and its withing 40mins drive of san diego
its also within 3 hours drive of L.A so plenty to see in that area
ive also stayed in the hard rock in san diego and been out in there gas lamp district and everytime ive been there ive not been dissapointed
if your gonna go let me know as ive been to alot of cool places there you could easily spend a month in C.A last time i took a mate for 28 days and i think we had about 3 days by the pool as there was so much to do we just couldnt fit it all in
also the weather is the best in the world imo its around 25C all year and a low humidity so your not sweting like a pig lol

Do the west coast start up in san fran and drive down through california down to the mexican border, plenty of different sites then make your way back upto vegas for one last blow out. I did vegas last year and did trips out to these kind of places but always returned to vegas.
I love vegas

You've just reminded me that I NEED to go to a gun range and fire a desert eagle
Would also like to hire a really nice car and drive in death valley for a day with the roof down:

if you start by flying into chicago, then drive down route 66 to West cost, then see all you can there, then go to vegas, you got to remember, America is a bloody big place, chicago to LA is not like london to manchester, its over 2000 miles, plenty to see but do you really want to spend that much time on the interstate, best bet would be do west coast stuff this year, and do chicago and washingto DC next time, and washington DC where the white house is, is 2000+ miles from washington state
i've spent a lot of time seeing America, over here now working as a truck driver to see even more, i spent 3 weeks in california about 6 years ago, seeing all the sites, and to do it properly, you need that 3 weeks and some.

John - I'd love to do it in a Porsche. Is it easy to rent them over there? If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost you per day? Is there a minimum age limit - im 22 at the moment.
bj928 - I don't fancy driving for all that distance on the interstate with not much to see. If we're going anywhere before the Westcoast, we'll fly from there to California or San Fran I think.
I think we're wanting to stop off in Washington DC or Boston (or anywhere else on the Eastcoast) to break up the long flight to the Westcoast. I hate long flights - injured my knee years ago and it begins to throb after 4-5 hours of sitting, so looking to keep flight times down as much as possible.
Anything else which is a must see on the Westcoast?
Oh and Stoo you're a lightweight!

I found Boston incredibly dull, even though I'm a bit of a history buff.
Philadelphia has the US Mint and the Liberty Bell, and I loved Washington DC.
Niagara Falls was worth seeing but the best view is from the Canadian side.
Detroit was interesting and you could easily spend a whole day or more at the Henry Ford Museum at Greenfield Village. Never made it any further west than that, though.

Very easy to rent just a credit card though i used my debit card and both parts of licence and passport. They took a security deposit of a 2 thousand dollars i think what went straight back into my account. The porsche was $400 for 24 hours i think or something round that give or take a few dollars though you can get discount. I'm 29 think it maybe 25 for some of the more supercar type cars and 21 for your other stuff from that company.

in california its easier to ask for places to avoid rather than places to go lol because theres so much to do everyone will tell different places to go things to see
i love it there and am looking to emergrate my dads been there 7/8 years now and still says he cant believe hes living there

Death Valley has it's name for a reason. Make sure you don't break down

Yeah, I was thinking about hiring an AC Cobra, but then thought how unreliable it might be. Going german might be a wiser choice.
PM on its way too.
No it wasn't bacardi
Didn't want to be the only gay in a heavily armed village of people in stetsons
I went on my honeymoon two years ago, we flew into San Fran, then to San Diego and then to Vegas, spending a week in each place. Was fantastic, wish we could have had longer in each place. Just make sure you bring plenty of money for Vegas

mackers - pleased to hear you had a good time, don't think I've heard of anyone not having a good time over there. Even Rab, whatever he got up to?!
You'll find heavily armed villages all over the US. I live in northern North Dakota and a conservative estimate would be 80% of homes have guns in them. I don't consider myself overly armed and I have 8 rifles, a shotgun, and 3 handguns. I was raised with guns around the house and was taught very early on to respect and be careful with them. All the weaponry in the area is not a problem; in the 135 year history of my town there has been one murder (with a knife not a gun) that I know of. Burglary is, for obvious reasons, almost unheard of.

Bring them on; my main home defense gun is a Colt 1911 Mark 4 Series 70 .45 ACP. It is loaded with hollow points and next to my bed.
