Default Help IDing a escos ECU and engine

Hi!

I'm in the USA and building a 3door Sierra RS Cosworth clone. I imported a base 3dr shell and grafted the parts to a Merkur XR4Ti donor shell. Lots of work! In the states, these cars are very rare. I managed to find a YB that came with a computer but I have no idea which one I have. The engine was from an early escos rally car (supposedly a big turbo model).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is a picture of the engine. The valve cover is green which tells me it's a sapphire 4x4 catalyst engine but I am not really sure as it could have been swapped due to it's rally background. Is there a way to check based on the numbers on the engine?

Thanks!
-Chad

ECU seems like a L6 or L1 and engine seems right as it not has the V-Belts but multi rib, block should have 200 on the side also

Maybe others can confirm or ad info

The ecu is def. a P8 weber/iaw version,it hasn't got a CO screw like the Ford sierra cosworth's L8 version.I don't recognise the babyboard though, can you see if the word 'Pectel' is written on the board?,the ecu's ID lable would also tell you the ness. details but it looks unreadable.
As far as i know,all big turboed(Garrett T3/4) escort cosworths had P8 ecu's.
I see that 1 of the small fixing screws inside the ecu is rust stained, prehaps you'd wanna investigate further for poss. water damage?,same thing goes for the engine as the injectors are missing, does the engine turn over ok?.
Do you have the correct wiring loom for the P8 ecu?,the Ford sierra version could be used but you will have to swap around a few wires,MAP sensor,TPS.
The engine looks legit.,just surface rust, was it out in the open?.
I've grafted onto a non Ford engine the wiring loom off a Lancia delta integrale and used a sierra L8 8 injector Pectel super 8 ecu and it works a treat so you'll have no probs. fitting it all mate.

I did get the entire harness with the car. i should take a picture of that as well. I'm not sure if the ECU is ok or not. There may have been some water in it at some point (I don't know). The engine had plugs where the injectors went in and came with the fuel rail. It does turn over but because I don't know the history I want to pull it apart and inspect.

How can I determine if the ECU is ok? Is there a reliable shop I can send it to to test?
Is there an aftermarket chip installed on this?
Is the P8 ECU desirable over any other ECU? Is the ECU unique to my wiring harness or can they be swapped?

Appreciate the help guys!

I dont know if there is an aftermarket chip installed, but it seems that there is some kind of babyboard installed. as far as I know it`s not standard.

The P8 is the latest version of those ecus and can do closed loop. others have to be modded.

L8 and P8 ecu's have exactly the same wiring loom and can be interchanged.
European version of the L8 (green engine cover) also has closed loop lambda control.
If you want things like launch control or ALS, then it's easier with a P8 ecu.
Theoretically the P8 is better, because it has a faster central processor, but in practice I never found any difference in power outputs from a L8 compared to a P8.

And yes, that's an aftermarket chip you have installed.

To find out the engine type, find it's YB number above the coolant pump pulley.

YBP or YBT: Escort (Small/Large turbo respectively)
YBG or YBJ: 4x4 Sierra (cat/non cat respectively)
YBB: 2wd Sierra Sapphire or 3 door
YBD: Sierra RS500

Provided the green cam cover's original, you'll find it'll probably be a YBG, so the number should read something like YBG1234.

The ecu is a P8 definitely, the babyboard that is fitted is merely an encryption board fitted by whoever wrote the chip to stop the map from being copied...... you will be able to get a chip off the shelf from most of the decent UK tuners to suit your engine spec once you know it....

Engine looms are not hard to get hold of, a saffy or a 3 door loom will be able to be grafted into your car without too much difficulty, they are available secondhand here from around Ł50 to Ł100+ depending on condition, or you could get a nice new custom made one with extra features like lambda etc for about Ł400

I used a 4x4 loom and L8 ECU for my conversion a few years ago and it was pretty much plug and play... even the plug for the warning lights (alt, tach, etc.) is the same. I only needed to add a trigger wire from the starter to the ignition switch and extend the alternator wires (the original 2.3T has it on the opposite side of the engine).

As I know L1 and L6 have NOT baby board's, and this on picture have - small board upper to main board of ECU.

Cool, finally got around to looking and it looks like the ECU matches the engine. I have a YBT and a P8. The valve cover appears to not be original. Thanks for the help.

I removed the clutch and found that it's a 4 puck. What power levels would necessitate this? Also, I want to run air conditioning. Does anyone have a picture of how the system mounts?

Thanks,
Chad

For the air conditioning, you'll need the pump, pump bracket, hoses, etc. On later engines like yours the power steering pump was relocated to the left (looking at the front), under the alternator, to make way for the air conditioning compressor which mounts to the block on the right below the distributor. You'll also need the longer drive belt and second tensioner. I couldn't find any pictures unfortunately, but this YBP shows the second tensioner and you can just see the mounting point on the 200 block, below the hole for the distributor shaft:

The ECU is a P8 and the the Board is an MTC or a BTC board for Antilag coilpack water injection air injectors etc.

If you lift the small board from the mother board and take a better picture i will be able to give you more info.

The "TCGN32" EPROM is probably meant for Group N use with a with a 32mm intake restrictor, Bosch 400 injectors, APS05 and 102 RON fuel.

Beware that if you run the engine at high load without the intake restrictor, or with the wrong fuel, map sensor or injectors, you will probably fry it (melt the pistons). As a matter of fact the fuel, compression ratio, injectors, map sensor and EPROM have to match.

The babyboard is a dongle that decrypts the EPROM. It was probably made by Pectel and the "developer" ID is on the square chip on the babyboard itself. I suggest that you contact Mountune Racing for details as they probably created the EPROM shown on the picture (see if the ID just mentionned is "M.R.E", which stands for Mountune Race Engines).

In any case you certainly want another chip as restricted engines are not fun at all. If you contact the developer they can certainly supply another program and tell you what kind of map sensor, fuel and injectors it needs.

Hello.
I'm with the same question. Help me to IDing this P8

my 2wd sapph starts with this ECU (2.5bar MAP and PF09 TPS) and stalls after a few seconds. If I put stock chip from another EsCos P8 ECU to this one - the engine doesn't start at all. No sparks.
