Searched for it. but still don't get it.

-R, +RW, -RW, +R etc

All I want to do is be able to copy AVI/DivX etc format files on to DVD so I can watch them on a DVD player. Basically coopying downloaded vids to DVD so I don't have to sit in front of the computer....... NOT porn before anyone suggests it

What do I need?

Rich you need to find out which formats your dvd can play then you will know what disc to choose.

dvd-r seems to work on the majority of players though.

I've found through doing Loose Change that -r's seem to have best results on most players.

If you can convert the files to MPG from AVI, you can burn them straight to DVD using Nero or similar.

Blank DVD-Rs: www.svp.co.uk

DivX avi to DVD converting tool (much faster than Nero and doesn't have issues with sound going out of synch): WinAVI

DivX playing DVD player (this means you can just burn the DivX files to DVD and watch them on TV - you can usually get half a TV series to one DVD-R ): http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=1221 (£26.99)

Cheers,

Andy

WinAVi is an excellent programme to look out for, Converts just about any format ie AVI/Mpeg etc to DVD Format, then just burn the FOB files to disc DVDR using NERO, easy peasy

Exactly as above. For best results you want to use a xxx to DVD format converter, such as WinAVI. Depending on the size of the disc tho (single sided blank DVD-R's are only 4.7GB, you might need a compressor to "shrink" the DVD files in order to fit on the disc.

If I am backing up one of my DVD discs, my normal course of action would be to rip and compress the disc using DVDShrink, then burn the VTS and VOB files using Nero.

If it's an MPEG or AVI, then I convert em using WinAVI, then if necesary shrink em in DVDShrink, then burn in Nero.

You WILL get bored VERY QUICKLY converting every video file that you download to MPG1.

One of 2 options really;

1) Get a DVD player (if you havent already) that supports PROPER XVID/DIVX format playback

2) Get a tv card in your pc and run a cable from PC -> TV (dont forget audio tho)

the 2nd option is obviously better (depending on where your pc/tv is), you save on discs, time, compatibility issues etc.

Another possible option, get a cheapo laptop to sit next to the TV.

I built DIY a PC media unit that connects via hdmi or vga to my tv...avi/xvid look surperb at 50 inch especially upscaled

Dont bother trying to convert avi to dvd as the quality turns shit plus takes 2 years

Alot of people think an avi file if say 700mb dont look any good on anything other than a moniter..WRONG put it on your TV in this order..DVI/HDMI is best...VGA direct to compatible TV is the same as moniter (film viewing only) worst scenario is a tv out video card to the tv...but although windows looks crap...avi files look great no matter what size TV

boschman, how on earth does converting from mpeg4 based AVIs into MPEG2 based DVD formats make them turn shit?

and as for your views in DVI vs VGA, i dont agree.

if youre watching it on a TV then THAT is your weakest link.

there's a reason that 50inch PC monitors costs tens of thousands and TVs don't

Jim Galbally

ive got a 24 inch dell flat screen ..

anything downloaded from the states hi def it plays flawless

ie 24 series or planet earth..but i think that was filmed in high def

normal films distort on my pc screen stretched out and look piss poor so do dvds playing via power dvd or VLC player

vso works for me loads of options on burn quality ..

for my large tv screen

there is a crack for the program somewhere on the tinternet

Jim lad...i have had nowt but problems trying to convert avi to dvd of course probably using a crap program..but its the time involved also much better to use a media tyep PC to TV.

Watching an AVI file on TV in whatever method of connection is as good as the moniter virtually....of course windows looks shit (NOT AVI FILES) UNLESS your TV has a VGA input then it looks better.....better still if it has DIGITAL input like a HD ready TV you get flawless windows at 50inch and the films are looking more vibrant.Think about it Jim...an AVI film dont look any better the higher the resolution YOU set your moniter too ..Also you need to see a PC game at 50inch on a DVI to HDMI TV stunning...BUT not as good as XBOX 360 running HiDef as the games were made for it

yes but the actual resolution (well, the dotpitch) of a TV is piss poor compared to a monitor.

slapping it up to higher resolutions wont make feck all difference, and at which using the higher quality DVI input wont make any difference anyway, as the noise on VGA would be taken up by the lower quality output on the monitor.

in order to get things looking "proper" you'll want a proper monitor rather than a TV. unfiortunately you'll have to sell your house to buy one, and then the quality will probably look WORSE as you'll see all the aliising on the screen where you can tell the pixels apart etc

Jim..i got one to one pixel mapping on my TV and thru DVI to HDMI running 1280 x 720 resolution looks spot on ...I beleive i can go higher resolution than that but as said looks as good as any moniter. Got a fairly high end graphics card though.

You really ought to look at the HD TV's Jim ones with VGA support aswell...you can see an ENORMOUS difference between using windows in VGA compared to DVI-HDMI.

But then i just a normal person so my eyes are obviously not as good as an IT persons eyes

BUT this is all beside the point...the point being an AVI film will look as good as the moniter if watching on a TV with any connection.

TV out card makes windows SHIT..films perfect

VGA input TV windows adequate..films perfect

DVI-HDMI windows lovely..films at there best

Thats thru experience not theory!!!

Look you cock smokers!

All I want to do is watch stuff I've downloaded from the net on my DVD player in the lounge.

Bear in mind, my computer is nothing special at all - 4 speed writer etc, and so far it takes about 5 hours to burn a 700MB AVI file to a standard DVD, and the quality isn't great on the TV at all........

I'm not geeky enough to start hooking up latops to TVs and all that shit - how is that even possible with my Dell laptop and a standard CRT TV?

Hello fella. I was having the same problems. When I did find a way to convert it it takes between 5-8 hours. I went to maplin and bought a multi format dvd player (Nissan DV-98S) for £50. You download burn to a normal cd-r and it will play straight away fella. Its on there web page if you search for nissan dvd player.

1280 * 768 VGA and DVI/HDMI wouldn't make a difference, bandwith / noise is not really an issue yet.

BUT you will need to go into your TV set settings to tune the VGA signal as not all video cards are the same (sometimes it's a tiny bit out of sync)

Once you get it right it's flawless.

DVI/HDMI is easiest though

Oh and PON, get a nice Philips player, they just take anything and are easy to set to play all regions.

RICH, get a decent player that supports ALL formats
then you dont need to mess around with converting etc.

one thing i have found is when my bro downloads the new episodes of the sopranos, he can watch them fine on his PC, but then he burns them to DVD for me, (in DVD format) they always start crashinf after 2 hours or so into the disc, goes pixelated and sounds jumps, and freezes etc.

is this likey to be:

1. my DVD player
2. his burnign software
3. the discs he is using

????????????????

Link your laptop to the tv its easy. I watched tokyo drift last night off my dell laptop on my telly.

Get an SVGA > RCA adaptor and a normal headphone jack to RCA cable. Then plug the svga end into your laptop and the headphone jack into the headphone out on your laptop. Then take your three RCA ends (video and sound right/left) plug them into a scart adaptor (i used the one that came with my ps2) and plug the scart into your tele.

If no picture comes up when you select the scart channel just right click on the desktop >goto properties then to the setting tab and tick the box which says "extend my desktop onto a second monitor". You should now see the tele come up with your desktop.
