Really Bad Idle - 1.8 Zetec
Hi There,
I have been having some problems recently with my 98 Escort 1.8 Si. The car was loosing a lot of power and idle was rough and cut out when engine was cold.
I took for an ECU scan which only uncovered an issue with AFM, I went to breakers and replaced this and all seemed well, idle improved a little and all my power has come back.
Day later... all my power is still there, however the idle has got worse - it will just keep cutting out all of the time if I'm at lights without foot on pedal. If I try and keep it around 1000-1500 with my foot it'll cough a bit, and then the revs will start climbing - it really fustrates me
Any ideas? Garage seem to think ICV looks new but it aint had one since I've owned it - and I got it at 78k and now it's done 87k.
I'm thinking about fitting a 2L throttlebody soon and some 2L cams and 130bhp ecu, is the ICV part of the throttlebody, and what pipework would I need to fit one with my existing airbox/ afm?
I would like to cure this problem really before having that lot fitted, would it be worth just getting a 1.8 throttlebody from breakers first (if ICV is part of it)
Any advice at all will be greatly appreciated - cheers

ICV is fitted under the inklet manifold and would be first point of call for an idle problem, other than that check the PBV valve which is on the front of the engine under the exhaust manifold, its on the right hand side as you look, bit of rubber with a tube going round the back. that oftens goes and is an easy fix
other than that get a diagnostics check done at fords as you could replace everything before you find the problem and sepnd far more than is needed to cure the prob

now you say that, it does seem to be that before you put your foot down on the pedal the revs won't climb much - not like it used to be.
if i phone the breakers tommorow, am I just asking for and idle control valve?
i'm quite competant at working things out/ good with my hands - but not a ace mechanic - can fit things but not fault find
should I be ok fitting it? I have all day

Mate they are very simple to do, couple of hours tops if you've never done it before. They are designed to be opened and cleaned, might save you a few pounds mate, but yes its called an idle speed control valve. Have a go at cleaning yours, Haynes manuals show how to do it
Lol a few people have said that, if only uou could send a pint in a jiffy bag
You haven't got a lot to lose though, once off, theres 2 screws securing the motor to the aluminium housing with the valve in, they get oily and over time it goes sticky and thick.

sortedwhen reassembling after clean, noticed one of the 2x wires for the ISCV connector was on by a thread
put on some new wire and fitted a new connector - resolved is idling quite high now though - how do you adjust the idle? in haynes manual it shows a screw somewhere on the throttlebody - can't see it though
Was it sticky inside aswell?Right, as for the idle, i'm not too up on the finer aspects, BUT im sure the zetec management is a later developement of the EEC IV management, and i know 100% on that the idle speed is conrolled by the ECU and can't be adjusted with the throttle screw.
What is it idling at?
sits below the throttlebody, but is a bit of a pain to get to as is bolted on underneath the pipes on the inlet manifold
takes a bit of knuckle bangin. (But then again, I'm not a mechanic so don't know if there is an easier way to get it off (bar removing the manifold, but don't fancy a new gasket)
Is silvery lookin
Mine will idle between 1000 and 1500, but sometimes sticks at 2000. If it goes down below 1000 it'll start burping and farting and if u dont apply some revvage it will cut out
I lubricated the bar aswell.
I think it's time for a new one - what does everyone think?

it's in the garage again, still having the issue with idle (now it's started running rich as f**k aswell, getting about 200 miles to the tank
)
they have had another look today but say the ISCV looks in perfect condition. They are getting another auto-electrician in tommorow to do another scan, now it's got worse - hopefully something will be uncovered.
any ideas, incase they don't find anything
?
