would it be worth it?

would it be worth it?
right well when i finally get an engine in my zetec s (planning 1.7 puma engine with bike throttle bodies) i was thinking about making a fibreglass bonnet, tailgate and front and rear bumpers, would it be worth it in saving weight or not really? i know the bonnet and tailgate will save weight but will the bumpers?

With fibreglass panels you have to be very carefull with how they are braced. Dave from PF had loads of problems with his bonnet lifting when the car was in motion due to the flex in the bonnet skin.
To be honest it's more hassle than it's worth unless you've already made the rest of the car as light as you can

so i would need to make a metal frame i guess then, shouldn't be too hard to do out of ali then put the fibreglass skins over the top
really considering this now as my bumpers weigh loads with all the fibreglass and filler on them

I would recommend using standard bonnet and go for lightweight bumpers tailgate etc.
The standard ford metal bonnet at highspeed flexes so i didnt even bother using my fibreglass one i had.
As for bumpers i would use standard ones as well and strip the reinforcing metal frameworf that is hidden under the foam filling on the reverse side of the bumpers. You will be surprised how much weight this saves.
I think the amount of fibreglass you will need to make the bumper sit and bolt nicely to the shell will out weigh a plastic bumper which is stripped out.
The tailagate is also an area in which i have saved alot of weight through using a fibregalss tailagte.
The biggest saving of weight has to be windows.

i plan on fibreglass tailgate
only reason i was going to make fibreglass bumper is because i have modded my bumpers alot, like gettin rid of front number plate recess, smoothed over swage lines, made rear plate recess 8 inches smaller and even if i remove all the inner sections of bumper they will still weigh alot, so i think fibreglass bumpers will be a must
from what you say i think i will keep my standard bonnet but see if i can remove anything from the underside
what windows would you recommend?

Surely you'd do better to source some unmolested standard bumpers and then strip them out as per Mr Yeti.
That'll teach you for filling your bumpers up with fibreglass and filler won't it

Which you've already been told about by somebody with experience.
Your car at the end of the day though if you don't want to take advice from those that know

Go for it then mate out of fibreglass, but i would still recomned using the standard ones and stripping them...
Windows - contact Plastics 4 performance they do a few options , from perspex - polycarbonate - clear or tinted and also they do a special coating to make them a little bit more resistant to scrathes.
That will save you alot of weight with the windows,
i would opt to use balck headed alloy rivots also on the windows and have the inside border painted black about 2cm in. This will hide where the window is fixed to.
Weight is minimal from loosing the rubbers but grams make kg...
