Apple Mac's
Been toying with the idea for a while of getting one and teaching myself a new OS. What are people's opinions on them. Not fussed on price opinions as I've already worked that out for myself and none of the Mac's are shit brigade thanks
OSX is a great system and really stable... its security and strength is great, and its user interface is functional yet stunning.
The only problem I have with Apple is that the hard wear is under powered and over priced.. Unless your a fashion victim who wants to own a uber cool mac I would consider an open PC

if you want to teach yourself a new OS I would suggest Linux, the powerful command line allows you to have the system exactly as you wish.
I think of the graphical based OS's as being communication with the system on the computers terms, you can only click what the computer presents to you and nothing more it leads the communication.
With a command line based OS you can enter commands to which the computer responds which means you lead the conversation.
Linux has a number of different desktops to use to suit your needs and nothing is cooler imho
Have a look at the beyrl desktop, makes Vista and OSX graphically poor

And Linux is FREE

If you can't work out how to use it in 10 minutes, put it back in the box and send it back
Macs are great - they're more expensive than the average PC, but the advantage is that more effort's gone into making them, and to make the most of what they DO have. It's only underpowered if you didn't get the one you actually needed and skimped on the hardware to save a few quid.
It's much like comparing a new Audi to a Cossie - yes the Cossie can be upgraded quicker, cheaper and easier than the Audi, but the Audi makes better use of what it has (ie, more efficient on fuel for example), and has had a lot more thought put into the design of the whole package.

They use dual core intel processors and motherboards, they use DDR Ram and they suffer the name bottle necks as a PC, they are still wrapped in a plastic case.Hell Apple do not even make the OS, its based on an open source and FREE BSD called Darwin.

If you buy a PC you get the build quality of a toyota, if you buy a mac for the same money you get a lower powered version of the same thing but with the prestige and quality of the Lexus badge.

Have no doubt all Mac's are overpriced for the specification, and I say that as a massive fan of the system

Fair comments, but part of the appeal for me is the style of the things, so I'll spec it properly and buy one. I'll be getting it from the US as I did a test earlier and the same spec when converted works out about £200 cheaper.
Linux doesn't really hold much appeal for me. The MAC I think is going to be ideal for picture and video editing which the girlfriend and I are both interested in.
Cheers
