Hi Guys, i've never actually done anything with 64 bit XP or Vista and am looking at giving it a go. I'm a bit ashamed to say that i've never tried it as i work in IT but could never really be arsed.
I've got a 64-bit board and processor now so i'm considering going with 64 bit Vista Ultimate for my home machine (I Wont be buying it, so cost isnt an issue.... MSDN subscription
)
Has anyone used 64 bit either xp or vista, and is it backwards compatible with the usual 32 bit apps etc, Nero, Roxio, Alcohol 120, Office 2k7 etc etc??
Whats it like on resources? more/less processor/memory hungry??
Been running Vista 32-bit since November without any issues
Cheers
Dave

I've not used the 64 bit version's of either, and sadly had to bin vista due to my firewall not working, and Battlefield 2 not running
Can't imagine that there will be a great differance between the OS's ??

It took 7 times to load a map, this to me is unnacceptable from an OS. I google'd it as well and there's a few sites that say the same. Tried compatibility mode, changing all the access things to no avail.
I'm hoping that EA will launch a patch for it, or microsoft will.

Still pondering this... if windows itself is 64 bit, surely it would benefit from a 64bit processor...but as most apps are 32 bit, they wouldnt?
If windows is faster it might be worth it, but again, no idea if it is or not. Need to find someone whos running one!! someone out there must have tried it out of curiosity or sheer boredom??

A change from a 32-bit to a 64-bit architecture is a fundamental alteration, as most operating systems must be extensively modified to take advantage of the new architecture. Other software must also be ported to use the new capabilities; older software is usually supported through either a hardware compatibility mode (in which the new processors support the older 32-bit version of the instruction set as well as the 64-bit version), through software emulation.
Running 32 bit Windows Applications in a 64bit Windows Enviroment offers minimal performance increases if any, until 64bit application ports arrive its simply not worth it.
I run 64bit Ubuntu Linux with 64bit Applications for this reason on one of my boxes
