Thumbs down Temp guage / sensor problem

Just been doing a bit of work under the bonnet on my Escort Cosworth. Put everything back together, but as soon as I turn the ignition on the temperature gauge goes straight up to the red, with the car not even running!!

Is it possible I have dislodged something when putting it back together? I had most of the front right side of the engine bay in bits, possibly dislodged a sensor when putting the boost hose from intercooler to inlet manifold back on????

Where exactly is the temp sensor for the temp guage on the Escort???

Default Temp guage / sensor problem

Sounds like it's going straight to earth. May have pinched the wire or something?

What he ^^ said, check the wire hasn't got shorted. The sensor is on the right hand side at the front of the head.

Hmmm.... Not getting very far with this.

My temp sensor seems to have 2 wires coming out of it????

Is the a wiring diagram for the EEC IV Escort posted on here anywhere?

Your looking at the CTS, this is not the sender, it just has a single wire and is on the right (drivers) side of the head.

Thumbs up

Thanks to those trying to help, but I'm still slightly confused!!

Let's not talk about "drivers side" or "passenger side" I have a LHD car!! It's also an EEC IV Escort, if that makes a difference!

The sensor I am looking at is on the inlet side of the head, just behind the cam belt (see picture below), is this the temp sensor that the temperature gauge uses??

Martin, isn't CTS "Coolant temp sensor"?

Sorry if I am being thick guys!! It's old age setting in!!!

The 2 wire sensor goes to the eec-iv. The one wire sensor goes to the gauge.

Have a look under the coil cover.

jsa is GOD!!!

OK, found temp sensor under the coil cover between the cams at front of head.

If I disconnect temp sensor then the gauge behaves, ie. doesn't shoot straight to the top when I turn on the ignition.

Question: Does this imply it is a temp sensor problem, rather than a wiring issue?

Question 2: Is it possible to change the temp sensor without removing the cam covers? If so, how?? It's a bit dark down there and I can't see exactly how it is fitted!!

Yes, it implies sensor problem. Slight possibility of a gauge problem. But not a wiring problem.

It is threaded, so unscrews like a bolt. Deep socket and extension required. From memory cam cover should be able to stay put.

Thanks John.

What are the chances of Ford (Mallorca) having a temp sensor for an Escort Cosworth, I would guess at 0%!! Looking like another call to Darren to post me some bits!!

A few weeks ago I replaced this sensor on my 4x4 sapph. But the sensor was located at the back of the head at the inlet side, very close to the oil dipstick. Is the sensor located differently on an Escort? I thought the sapph 4x4 and Escort engines were (mechanically) very much the same?

It's a 1996 EEC IV Escort Cosworth. different head to your car and the Webber Escorts.
