Default fuel pump relay.

hi all,
new to this site and cosworths so please bare with me.
i have a mk1 escort and just been given a 2wd cosworth engine.
i have the engine bay harness and ecu. the harness has 2 relays both yellow.
1 black connector and i yellow. i think the black is for the fuel pump.
there is also a purple connector with no relay, is this used.

ok. my problem is i have a self contained fuel system in the car, seperate relays and fused.

can i do away with the relay on the loom or do i need to use it because of the ecu. if so HOW.

any info would be great.

thanks

You can find wiring diagrams here: http://bigturbo.co.uk/main6.htm
I think you can replace the fuel pump relay for your own. Don't forget the amal valve and the Idle speed valve!
I would keep the main relay as it feeds the ecu, ignition coil and the injectors.

Same thing with my car, 2WD Saff Cossie. Purple connector is connected to nothing and it all still works fine. I'm not an expert but possibly it's for aircon or some other addition that isn't in the car.....who knows? I'd like to know too though!

I would leave the relays alone and use the saph fuel relay 12v+ (pin 87) to trigger your new fuel relay/s.
Once the ECU is activated its pin 28 that activates earth switch to the fuel relay (pin 85 ) which in turn provides the 12v+ at the pump ,iscv and boost solenoid.

It depends how you have wired your new relays in. If pin 85 on your new relay is the 12v+ 'trigger' on the coil side then yes the above will be correct.

That is correct, do you actually have the ECU etc powered up yet? If not it needs to be...

But you say your not getting a supply from the trigger, therefore, ground it.

If you have power, then it is not being switched via the ECU.

I am referring to the relay...

The relay is grounded via the ECU, but if is this is not happening it would explain why you have no power from it.

Therefore, if you ground the relay this should close it.

Make sure you have a good earth for the pump itself .

If you only want your new relay/fuel system setup connect pin 28 wire to the trigger side on new relay. That can be 86 or 85 and earth the other side .
If your battery is in the boot earth the pump direct .

so all your relays and fuses are fine and have power at the ECU.
Check the wiring associated at the hairbrush and give them a clean up.
ECU turns the pump on as said^ via pin 28.

Is the pump earthed well and is it new/old??

Not sure about the amal valve but im sure ive unplugged mine before and started the car so no effect there imo.

one of the pins is bent and not connecting in the chip, within the ecu.
i take it this may be the problem.
and nowhere on kos to fix ecu's.

So you have power @ the OE relay? If it does not close, you have a faulty relay? (assuming you have it wired correctly)

The ECU is irrelevant as this is not controlling the relay (as you grounded it).

IT LIVES again.
after all your input and advise. a lot of checking rechecking and checking again, i found the problem.
2 faulty brand new relays.
so 2 more sent from athens, another 55 euros, so 110 euros in totall.
i also installed a new chip. pins looked nasty.
hey presto, the beast lives.
thanks for all our advice guys.
will post a video asap.
