Default Help on blue smoke from a Cosworth

Hi all,

I noticed my car a Escort Cosworth with a 205 block sierra engine and running gear is blowing a small bit of smoke on cold start ups, but only when it is sat level, if I park it on the drive facing forward or back on a slop I get no smoke at all.

The car did have a bit too much oil in the engine and I thought it might just be burning this off, it is getting near to the correct amount now but is still blowing a bit of blue smoke from cold. Only blows in 1st and 2nd when you get near to boost once, then it clears its throat and never does it again after that no matter how hard or slow you drive it.

The engine has been rebuilt at some point and has no piston slap at all. Sounds lovely, no tapping etc. Does not blow any smoke on warm startup, boost, over run etc etc. Possibly has a very slight oil leak but not sure if this is oil or power steering fluid.

Car never blew anything when I purchased and for the first couple weeks. I had to top the oil up and put 5 - 30 full synth in her and I guess it has done it ever since I put that in.

Any ideas?

Someone suggested using 15-50 oil?

Thanks in advance

Mark

Car is running stage 3 power, T34.63, Uprated HG, ARP bolts, RS500 intercooler, Alloy Rad etc etc etc

Would the thin oil be causing the smoke do you think? It has only happened since I put that in and only on cold which tells me something is shrinking when cooling and the thin oil is creaping out...?

the thin oil may be getting past the valve stem seals, the fact that you say its only done it since you changed the oil answers your question really lol plus too much oil can also cause it to smoke too

What he ^^ says, ignore the 5/30 recommendation from Halfords etc, I am pretty sure they just unify this information!

It really is too thin for these old engines, they don't have the close tolerances of a modern engine, so it's quite possible that is the reason for it burning it!

It should do it more so when hot, in theory, as the oil is thinner!

OK Guys, good enough for me.

I will get a oil change sorted on the old girl and get hold of some 15-50 if possible, failing that 10-50

Mobil 1 is 15W/50, and Fuchs Pro-S (Formally Silkolene) is 10W/50, both are rated for these.

What I have picked up from reading on here and a bit of own experience is that if it smokes blue on cold startup it tends to be valve seals/guides leaking after shut down, and oil getting burnt off at startup.

If it smokes on warm startup, it could also be turbo exhaust seal leaking, and oil getting burnt off when in contact with hot exhaust. The fact that it doesn't smoke if the front end is pointing downwards, would point at turbo seal i'll say.

But the thin oil wont help for sure

My first thought was early signs of turbo, which is annoying as it was rebuilt not a massive amount of miles ago, but then saying that so was everything else. I shall try the oil first and if I can at the weekend strip the pipe work off the turbo and look for signs of wear and oil etc
