MPG help on my 2001 Focus
Guys......In need of some help here!
I am getting shocking MPG from my 2001 Focus 2.0 16v Zetec Estate.
Bit about my car....
1 owner from new
Full Ford history
Just had a complete service using Castrol Magnatec oil 5/30 fully synth, OE oil filter, OE air filter, Bosch Super 4 plugs, New HT leads, all breather pipes cleaned & MAF cleaned.
She has done just over 114,000 miles.
I am getting about 230-250 miles to a full tank (55 litres) I drive mostly in town but sometimes get on the B roads. I think 230 miles to 55 litres is mad considering I drive carefully......I was expecting another 100 miles at least on this, say 330-350 miles to a full tank of petrol. The mid section of the exhaust has a very minor blow but surely that would not cause me to use so my fuel.
Any help would be great as my pockets seem to be getting very empty!

Exhaust leak can cause this. If the leak is close or before the oxygen sensor it will influence the signal (make it lean) and the ecu will enrich, enrich, enrich ....
Due to my poor MPG I keep on thinking about getting something with around the same MPG only with a load of BHP!
I read that UK spec Scooby's can do 22mpg around town if driven with care. Trying to think what other cars would be good......306 GTI-6 maybe? Cant have a saloon as I have a dog.

My 1.6 Focus gets 21-27mpg around down, 30-35mpg if I thrash it and 45-50mpg on the motorway or a run.
Unfortunatley I don't get 80mpg if I thrash it on the motorway like I expected it too
Focus MPG sucks! But when they work 100% they are very nice to drive! Mine was 100% for the first time in 4-5 years for all of 130miles and the rear wheel bearing threw itself big time.

That does seem very low mpg, around 20mpg if my maths are right.
As said though a small hole anywhere near either side of the lambda can do this, the reason why it can do it after the lambda is because exhausts also suck, in between each power pulse pressure wave there exists a low pressure vacuum pulse, I changed a car years ago with this problem a tiny 3-4mm hole about 1/2 foot after the lambda affected the mixture.

Thanks for the helpful replies guys!!
So the 2.0 Zetec engine is a good engine? I bought it as it has only 1 owner (Old boy) with full Ford history and is in almost showroom condition inside and out. I use it to go to work and take my dogs out (Bullmastiff's) I wonder if having a load of tools or almost 20st of dogs in the boot would effect the fuel consumption?
I am thinking about getting either a K&N panel filter or Pipercross as heard they can up the MPG by 2 or so MPG and release a few horses? I have already modified the airbox so it has a direct feed from the grill.

assuming theres around 5 litrs left in the tank when you fill up thats around the 22 mpg mark. if theres a lot of stopping and starting in your town driving than that will be the main reason, also if you carry a lot of tools around all the time and the dogs and being a heavier estate model it all sounds about right to me for town driving. remember weight needs more energy to move it about.
i've got a 2000 2l 5dr zetec and get 31 mpg with mixed driving. no motorway, odd bit of dual carriageway, open road, town, pootling about and giving it death and when i do get on the motoway and dual carriageway i cruise around 80 which doesn't help lol. found my mums old 1.8 (same year) did about the same but wasn't as quick!

Change the fuel filter. If it's pollueted in contaminents it would reflect in the performance of the car and mpg. It's an easy job btw, just disconnect the relay for the fuel pump and get a long socket to release the bracket (10mm).
