Default Focus vs Subaru....Advice needed!

Guys!!

In need of some advice here. At present I have a 2001 Focus 2.0 Zetec Estate. I get around 280-300 miles to a tank of fuel. I have seen UK Spec Subaru 2.o Turbo's Estate (Wagon's I think they call them?) going for as little as £1,200 which has made me think about selling my Focus as a Scooby being a 200+ bhp 4 wheel driven car.....but, the think that is getting in the way is...... I drive fairly hard, I wonder how many miles I would get out of a tank and also are parts expensive?

Thanks in advance for any advice as I know nothing about Scooby's!

They are supposed to be shocking on fuel, there's a few owners of them on here so sure someone will be on soon...

Mine was heavy on fuel, if you drive heavy then it'll be around 20mpg. Problem is you'll get bored n want it chipped, stainless, etc etc. They are a bit of a money pit so you need to be flush to run one.

I have a 320bhp STi and it's really economical (have rarely had a hugely economical car, so to some it may not be, but for the performance it is). Always over 30mpg on a decent run, mid 30's if you really want. Obviously if you're gunning it, and you will want to some of the time, that figure will drop dramatically, but at sensible revs it's brilliant on fuel for what it is.

It is mapped on V-Power though and I never put anything else in.

Are you maintaining it yourself ?, serious pain in the rs to work on for some simple jobs, used hard can get nearer 10mpg, I did ha ha but wasn't my car and I wasn't paying for fuel so didn't care.
Very well built, but do have some design flaws engine wise, don't like them myself, rather a cossie anyday, just running in, well trying to stay off loud pedal as not full power mapped yet but my 2wd sapphy just did 390 to a tank on a running in map but all local work.

They're not difficult to work on at all really, although granted a 5 minute spark plug change becomes a half hour job (or more if you've never tackled one before)

I was gonna say, I dropped the oil and filter on mine and it wasn't that bad. The thing that gets dear is when they start wanting cam belts and diff and gearbox oil changes. Clutches are expensive and fitting is a major feat of engineering.

They are good cars. Get one you'll love it, just don't buy a shed n you'll be fine.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Tell you what gets me is my 2.0 MK1 Zetec drinks fuel......To my 50 litre tank I get 300 miles. This is mainly town/B road driving but still bloody expensive. Its not like she hasn't been looked after either......1 owner from new with full Ford stamped history and receipts. I have given her a full service.....Bosch Super 4 plugs, new HT leads, OE air filter, TB cleaned, oil (Castrol Magnatec 5/30) OE oil filter, 2 treatments of STP fuel injection cleaner and I only run her on either Shell or BP fuel......Cant understand why so thirsty? So my thoughts are....If my car is thirsty with 130bhp on tap then why not get a 200bhp car that surely cant be that much worse on fuel?

That works out around 27-28mpg, are you doing mostly town work ?, as a comparison my old mondy ghia AUTO averages around 36mpg doing local trip stuff, 10-20 miles, but drops when sat in traffic a lot as petrol engines are not very efficient when idling.

I think the only thing that would put me off a subaru is the flat 4 engine. I know absolutely nothing about them, so when it went tits up, I wouldn't have a clue where to start. I know the mechanical principles are the same with any normal engine but it would personally put me off a bit. Same with the RX8's rotary engine.

The flat 4 has some very good things in it's favour, COG being one, and they last longer than just a trip to the shops unlike the rotarys!!

the flat 4 engine is a good un and a scoob that hasnt been played with will go on forever,,,,,iv had a scooby/scoobys for years now (i run a subaru forum),,,and own a 500bhp 53 plate and a mazda rx8 aswell and the scooby is loads better on fuel than the mazda and by a mile aswell,,,,,,i wouldnt ever buy a rotory again as it drinks fuel and oil like its free,,,

iv found scoobs to be good on fuel for the power you are getting as its never going to be as good as a 1.1 run around

just got to see what the connect rs (focus) is like when its done and can compare all of them then ,,,
